Analysis of Results Overview
- Visitor arrivals decreased by 2.6% year-on-year to 30,714,628 in 2015, the first decline recorded since 2010. Overnight visitors dropped by 1.8% to 14,307,767, and same-day visitors declined by 3.3% to 16,406,861 (53.4% of total). The average length of stay of visitors rose by 0.1 day year-on-year to 1.1 days; overnight and same-day visitors had an average stay of 2.1 days and 0.2 day respectively.
Visitors on package tours decreased by 12.1% year-on-year to 9,788,820.
- Total spending of visitors amounted to MOP 51.13 billion, down by 17.2% year-on-year, marking the first decline since the data was first released in 2010. Total spending of overnight visitors (MOP 40.17 billion) decreased by 21.1%, while that of same-day visitors (MOP 10.96 billion) rose slightly by 0.9%.
Meanwhile, per-capita spending of visitors was MOP 1,665, down by 15.0% year-on-year; per-capita spending of overnight visitors (MOP 2,807) dropped by 19.6%, whereas that of same-day visitors (MOP 668) rose by 4.3%.
- A total of 106 hotels/guesthouses were operating at end-2015, an increase of 8 year-on-year, bringing the number of guest rooms up by 15.6% to 32,249. In 2015, the average occupancy rate of hotels/guesthouses dropped by 6.0 percentage points to 80.5%. Number of guests staying in hotels/guesthouses decreased by 2.1% year-on-year to 10,488,838; visitor-guests (9,852,688) accounted for 68.9% of the total overnight visitors, up marginally by 0.1 percentage point.
- Outbound Macao residents using services of travel agencies totalled 1,511,143, down by 1.7% year-on-year; those travelling on package tours increased by 4.2% to 610,469 (40.4% of total).

Visitor Arrivals
Visitor arrivals peaked in August (3,033,081) and were lowest in June (2,248,281). Compared to 2014, visitor arrivals in March registered the largest decline (-13.5%), while February and December recorded an increase of 4.5% and 3.7% respectively.
Analysed by mode of transport, visitor arrivals by land accounted for 56.0% of the total, at 17,210,946, down by 1.0% year-on-year; visitors entering through the Border Gate (15,176,480) dropped by 2.6% while those through the Checkpoint of Cotai (2,009,551) rose by 13.1%. Visitor arrivals by sea totalled 11,413,908, down by 5.5% year-on-year, with those arriving via the Outer Harbour (6,992,837) and the Provisional Ferry Terminal in Taipa (4,098,894) declining by 5.0% and 3.4% respectively. Visitor arrivals by air increased by 1.7% year-on-year to 2,089,774, of which 2,076,926 arrived via the airport, up by 2.5%.

As regards visitors on package tours, the highest visitor number for the year was recorded in August (905,625) and the lowest in June (716,851). For the whole year of 2015, visitors arriving on package tours totalled 8,535,071, accounting for 87.2% of the total package tour visitors.

In accordance with the results from the Visitor Expenditure Survey, 57.4% of the visitors came to Macao mainly for vacation, down by 1.0 percentage point year-on-year; the proportion of visitors coming for gaming (8.5%) increased by 1.2 percentage points, while that for visiting relatives & friends (5.5%) dropped by 0.6 percentage point. Meanwhile, 22.6% came to Macao for transit, up by 0.7 percentage point.
Analysed by economic activity status, 20.7% of the visitors were legislators, senior officials &
managers, 13.6% were technicians & associate professionals and 12.4% were clerks. Besides, 29.4% of the visitors were unemployed and economically inactive (such as housewives and retirees).

Spending of Visitors
Total spending of visitors amounted to MOP 51.13 billion in 2015, down by 17.2% year-on-year; total spending of overnight visitors dropped by 21.1% to MOP 40.17 billion (78.6% of total). Despite a decrease in same-day visitors, total spending of same-day visitors edged up by 0.9% to MOP 10.96 billion owing to an increase in per-capita spending. Meanwhile, per-capita spending of visitors was MOP 1,665, down by 15.0% year-on-year; per-capita spending of overnight visitors (MOP 2,807) dropped by 19.6% while that of same-day visitors (MOP 668) rose by 4.3%.
Analysed by type of expense, visitors spent mainly on Shopping (45.8% of total), followed by Accommodation (25.4%) and Food & Beverage (20.7%). Overnight visitors spent more on Shopping (38.7%) and Accommodation (32.4%), while Shopping made up 71.9% of the spending of same-day visitors.

Per-capita shopping spending of visitors was MOP 762, down by 20.0% year-on-year. As regards type of purchase, spending on Local Food Products and Cosmetics & Perfume increased by 8.6% and 11.1%
respectively, while spending on Jewellery & Watches and Handbags & Shoes decreased notably by 59.1%
and 47.0% respectively.

A total of 106 hotels/guesthouses were operating at end-2015, an increase of 8 year-on-year (five 5-star hotels and three 4-5-star hotels). Total number of guest rooms thus increased by 4,345 (+15.6%) to 32,249; 5-star hotel rooms (20,559) rose by 11.9% and 4-star hotel rooms (7,719) soared by 38.7%.
The average occupancy rate of hotels/guesthouses stood at 80.5%, down by 6.0 percentage points year-on-year, with decrease being observed across all categories of establishments. 5-star hotels had the highest occupancy rate, at 82.2%, yet representing a drop of 5.3 percentage points; meanwhile, 4-star hotels recorded the largest decline of 8.6 percentage points, at 79.2%.
The average occupancy rate of hotels/guesthouses showed year-on-year decline in every month of 2015. The average occupancy rate in August (86.2%) dropped by 3.8 percentage points, while that in June (75.4%) tumbled by 9.1 percentage points.
With new hotels commencing operation, number of guests staying in hotels/guesthouses started rising year-on-year in August. Yet, total number of guests for the whole year of 2015 still declined by 2.1%, at 10,488,838. Analysed by accommodation establishments, guests staying in 4-star hotels totalled 2,812,056, up slightly by 0.6% year-on-year; guests in all other categories of establishments registered decrease, in which 5-star hotel guests dropped by 1.9% to 6,157,340 (58.7% of total). The average length of stay of guests was 1.5 nights, up by 0.1 night year-on-year; guests of 5-star hotels stayed the longest, at 1.7 nights.

Visitor arrivals from Asia decreased by 2.5% year-on-year to 30,032,407 (97.8% of total visitor arrivals) in 2015; overnight visitors (13,969,410) and same-day visitors (16,062,997) dropped by 1.7% and 3.2% respectively. Visitors from Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan totalled 27,933,217 (93.0% of total Asian visitors), with overnight visitors accounting for more than 50.0% of their respective total. In terms of spending, visitors from Mainland China and Singapore had relatively higher per-capita spending among the Asian visitors.

Mainland Visitors
Mainland China was the major source market of visitors to Macao. Mainland visitors totalled 20,410,615 (66.5% of total visitor arrivals) in 2015, down by 4.0% year-on-year. Same-day visitors accounted for 54.8% of the total Mainland visitors, at 11,176,465, down by 3.0%; overnight visitors also decreased by 5.1% to 9,234,150. The average length of stay of Mainland visitors was 1.1 days, up by 0.1 day year-on-year; overnight and same-day visitors had an average stay of 2.1 days and 0.2 day respectively. Moreover, Mainland visitors travelling to Macao under the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) totalled 9,519,317 (46.6% of total Mainland visitors), down slightly by 0.5% year-on-year.
Analysed by mode of transport, Mainland visitors arrived mainly by land, at 14,870,322 (72.9% of total), down slightly by 0.9% year-on-year; visitors entering through the Border Gate (13,120,186) decreased by 2.6%, while those arriving via the Checkpoint of Cotai (1,736,386) increased by 14.7%.
Analysed by province and municipality, Mainland visitors came primarily from Guangdong Province, rising slightly by 0.4% year-on-year to 9,043,931, of which IVS visitors (74.9% of the provincial total) increased by 3.3% to 6,777,793. Visitors from both Fujian Province (-3.3%) and Hunan Province (+8.0%) exceeded 800,000, but IVS visitors merely accounted for 21.8% and 10.8% of the respective total.
Meanwhile, over 90% of the visitors from Shanghai and Tianjin travelled to Macao under the IVS.

Total spending of Mainland visitors amounted to MOP 40.10 billion, down by 19.8% year-on-year.
Spending of Guangdong visitors rose by 1.5% to MOP 14.15 billion (35.3% of total spending of Mainland visitors), while that of Fujian visitors dropped by 25.8% to MOP 1.34 billion. Total spending of overnight visitors was MOP 31.03 billion (77.4% of total), down by 24.6% year-on-year; meanwhile, total spending of same-day visitors increased by 2.5% to MOP 9.07 billion, of which spending of Guangdong visitors (MOP 7.06 billion) accounted for 77.8%.
Total spending of IVS visitors decreased by 16.9% year-on-year to MOP 21.82 billion (54.4% of total spending of Mainland visitors); spending of Guangdong and Fujian IVS visitors amounted to MOP 12.10 billion (+6.1%) and MOP 520 million (-39.9%) respectively.
Per-capita spending of Mainland visitors decreased by 16.5% year-on-year to MOP 1,965, which was mainly spent on Shopping (53.5% of total) and Accommodation (23.0%). Guangdong and Fujian visitors had relatively low per-capita spending among the Mainland visitors, at MOP 1,565 and MOP 1,535 respectively; visitors from these two provinces spent more on Shopping, accounting for 67.5% and 44.1%
of their respective total. On the other hand, per-capita spending of IVS visitors decreased by 16.5% year-on-year to MOP 2,292, of which Shopping spending constituted 62.9%. IVS visitors from Guangdong Province and Fujian Province spent an average of MOP 1,785 and MOP 2,738 respectively; Shopping spending of Guangdong IVS visitors accounted for a significant share of 72.6%.

Per-capita spending of overnight Mainland visitors was MOP 3,360, down by 20.6% year-on-year.
They spent mainly on Shopping (45.2% of total) and Accommodation (29.7%), and the preferred shopping items included Clothing (22.5% of Shopping spending) and Local Food Products (21.0%). Overnight visitors from Guangdong Province and Fujian Province spent an average of MOP 2,518 and MOP 3,116 respectively.
Per-capita spending of overnight IVS visitors decreased by 25.4% year-on-year to MOP 3,684;
shopping spending accounted for 50.7% of the total, consisting mainly of Local Food Products (MOP 404) and Clothing (MOP 400). Overnight IVS visitors from Guangdong Province and Fujian Province spent an average of MOP 2,647 and MOP 3,523 respectively.
Per-capita spending of same-day visitors was MOP 812, up by 5.7% year-on-year. They spent mainly on Shopping (MOP 666), with Local Food Products (33.8%) and Cosmetics and Perfume (23.8%) predominating. Same-day visitors from Guangdong Province and Fujian Province spent an average of MOP 1,133 and MOP 225 respectively. Meanwhile, per-capita spending of same-day IVS visitors increased by 5.1% to MOP 1,333, with those from Guangdong Province and Fujian Province spending an average of MOP 1,425 and MOP 718 respectively.
Analysed by purpose of visit, 61.4% of the Mainland visitors came to Macao mainly for vacation, down by 1.2 percentage points year-on-year; transit visitors accounted for 28.7%, up by 1.6 percentage points. In terms of economic activity status, 21.5% of the visitors were legislators, senior officials & managers.
As regards accommodation, Mainland visitors staying in hotels/guesthouses totalled 6,683,044, down by 3.7% year-on-year; those staying in 5-star hotels (3,617,054) accounted for 54.1% of the total. Among the overnight Mainland visitors (9,234,150), 72.4% stayed in hotels/guesthouses, up by 1.1 percentage points year-on-year; the average length of stay of visitor-guests rose by 0.1 night to 1.3 nights.

Visitor arrivals from Hong Kong totalled 6,534,543, up by 1.7% year-on-year; overnight visitors (3,065,380) increased by 9.9% while same-day visitors (3,469,163) decreased by 4.6%. Owing to geographical proximity, Hong Kong visitors came to Macao mainly by sea, at 4,971,874 (76.1% of total), up by 3.2% year-on-year; those arriving via the Outer Harbour (3,128,340) stayed stable whereas those via the Provisional Ferry Terminal in Taipa (1,824,599) rose by 9.6%. The average length of stay of Hong Kong visitors increased by 0.1 day year-on-year to 0.8 day; overnight visitors stayed an average of 1.6 days, up by 0.2 day, while the average stay of same-day visitors held stable at 0.2 day.
Total spending of Hong Kong visitors edged up by 0.3% year-on-year to MOP 5.80 billion, while per-capita spending decreased by 1.4% to MOP 887. With an increase in overnight visitors, total spending of overnight visitors rose by 3.4% to MOP 4.58 billion but their per-capita spending dropped by 5.9% to MOP 1,495. Meanwhile, total spending (MOP 1.21 billion) and per-capita spending (MOP 349) of same-day visitors decreased by 9.9% and 5.5% respectively.

Hong Kong Visitors
Analysed by consumption structure, Hong Kong visitors spent mainly on Food & Beverage (34.5%) and Accommodation (28.5%). Shopping spending took up merely 16.1% of the total, with Local Food Products (MOP 119) accounting for 83.5% of the Shopping spending.In terms of purpose of visit, 38.8% of the Hong Kong visitors came to Macao mainly for vacation, up slightly by 0.4 percentage points year-on-year; the proportions of visitors coming for gaming and business
& professional purposes were 26.7% and 15.0%, both being higher than in other countries or places. As regards economic activity status of visitors, the proportions of technicians & associate professionals (14.8%) and legislators, senior officials & managers (14.6%) were relatively high.
Hong Kong visitors staying in hotels/guesthouses rose by 14.3% year-on-year to 1,488,609 (48.6% of overnight Hong Kong visitors); those staying in 5-star hotels totalled 1,005,826 (67.6% of total), up by 9.8%. Analysed by month, December had the largest number of visitor-guests, at 166,984, up substantially by 55.9%; January and February had less than 100,000 visitor-guests each.

Visitor arrivals from Taiwan increased by 3.6% year-on-year to 988,059; overnight visitors (450,795) rose by 10.0% while same-day visitors (537,264) dropped by 1.2%. About half of the Taiwan visitors (487,740) came to Macao via the airport, up by 6.9% year-on-year. Attributable to the increase in number and length of stay of overnight visitors, the average length of stay of Taiwan visitors increased by 0.1 day to 1.0 day; overnight and same-day visitors stayed 2.2 days and 0.1 day respectively on average.
Despite an increase in visitor arrivals from Taiwan, total spending of Taiwan visitors declined by 6.0%
year-on-year to MOP 1.45 billion owing to a drop in per-capita spending. Total spending of overnight visitors (MOP 1.33 billion) decreased by 6.0% whereas that of same-day visitors (MOP 119 million) dropped by 6.3%. Per-capita spending of Taiwan visitors fell by 9.2% year-on-year to MOP 1,466, with that of overnight visitors (MOP 2,950) and same-day visitors (MOP 221) dropping by 14.5% and 5.2%
respectively.
Taiwan visitors spent mainly on Accommodation (39.5%), Food & Beverage (26.5%) and Shopping (24.9%). Local Food Product accounted for 58.0% (MOP 212) of the per-capita shopping spending, up by 4.4 percentage points year-on-year.
The proportion of Taiwan visitors coming to Macao for transit (51.0%) decreased by 0.6 percentage points year-on-year, but was still far higher than in other countries or places; the proportion of those coming for vacation (39.1%) rose by 0.5 percentage point. About 32.6% of the visitors were legislators, senior officials & managers, higher than the proportions in other countries or places; only 17.1% were the unemployed and economically inactive persons.
Taiwan visitors staying in hotels/guesthouses increased by 5.6% year-on-year to 378,794; those staying in 4-star hotels (101,359) rose significantly by 32.6% while those staying in 5-star hotels (252,897) dropped by 1.6%.

Visitor arrivals from the Republic of Korea totalled 554,177, down slightly by 0.1% year-on-year;
overnight visitors (276,946) dropped by 2.0% while same-day visitors (277,231) rose by 2.0%. The average length of stay of Korean visitors increased by 0.2 day year-on-year to 1.1 days, with overnight visitors and same-day visitors staying 2.0 days and 0.3 day on average. Visitors staying in hotels/guesthouses increased by 4.1% to 225,774; those staying in 5-star hotels rose notably by 13.7% to 147,316 (65.2% of Korean visitor-guests).
Visitor arrivals from Japan decreased by 5.9% year-on-year to 282,217, with overnight visitors (165,038) dropping by 8.8%. The average length of stay of visitors held stable at 1.0 day. Total spending of Japanese visitors amounted to MOP 430 million, down by 22.3% year-on-year; per-capita spending of visitors decreased by 17.4% to MOP 1,524, which was mainly spent on Accommodation (45.8%) and Food
& Beverage (27.6%). Moreover, 97.9% of the overnight Japanese visitors chose to stay in hotels/guesthouses, at 161,530, down by 5.9% year-on-year; those staying in 5-star hotels decreased by 5.6% to 107,973 (66.8% of Japanese visitor-guests).

Visitor arrivals from Malaysia decreased by 8.4% year-on-year to 229,102, of which overnight visitors totalled 134,575 (58.7%), down by 6.3%. The average length of stay of visitors rose by 0.2 day year-on-year to 1.3 days. Total spending of Malaysian visitors was MOP 356 million, down by 18.0% year-on-year-on-year-on-year;
per-capita spending of visitors decreased by 10.5% to MOP 1,556, of which spending on Accommodation, Shopping and Food & Beverage accounted for 37.6%, 26.8% and 24.5% respectively. Meanwhile, 97,167 Malaysian visitors stayed in hotels/guesthouses, down by 8.8% year-on-year; those staying in 5-star (47,320) and 4-star hotels (31,945) constituted 48.7% and 32.9% respectively of the total.
Visitor arrivals from Thailand increased by 2.8% year-on-year to 180,836, with same-day visitors (85,474) rising by 7.8%. The average length of stay of visitors was 1.1 days, up by 0.1 day. Total spending (MOP 239 million) and per-capita spending (MOP 1,323) of Thai visitors decreased by 7.5% and 10.0%
respectively year-on-year. Number of Thai visitors staying in hotels/guesthouses dropped by 2.0% to 72,559, with those staying in 5-star hotels (39,063) rising by 5.5%.
Visitor arrivals from Singapore (158,814) decreased by 19.2% year-on-year; the average length of stay of visitors rose by 0.1 day to 1.1 days. Total spending (MOP 274 million) and per-capita spending (MOP 1,726) of Singapore visitors dropped by 26.7% and 9.4% respectively year-on-year. Number of Singapore visitors staying in hotels/guesthouses totalled 75,265, down by 16.9%; those staying in 5-star (46,563) and 4-star hotels (23,304) together accounted for 92.8% of the total.

Long-haul visitors decreased by 4.2% year-on-year to 682,221. Visitors from Americas rose slightly by 0.2% to 286,327 (42.0% of long-haul visitors) while those from Europe (257,684) and Oceania (107,313) dropped by 4.5% and 11.9% respectively. Moreover, both total spending and per-capita spending of visitors from Americas, Europe and Oceania registered year-on-year decrease, and these visitors spent mainly on Accommodation and Food & Beverage.

Visitors from the United States (US) increased slightly by 0.6% year-on-year to 182,532. As the number (92,145) and average length of stay (2.4 days) of overnight US visitors rose by 1.8% and 0.5 day respectively, the average length of stay of US visitors increased by 0.3 day year-on-year to 1.3 days. Total spending of US visitors amounted to MOP 234 million, up slightly by 0.6% year-on-year; per-capita spending of visitors held stable as in 2014, at MOP 1,281. Visitors spent primarily on Accommodation (38.9%) and Food & Beverage (30.4%). Per-capita spending on Shopping was MOP 185 (14.4% of total);
Local Food Products accounted for 71.1% of the Shopping spending, relatively higher compared with other long-haul visitors.
US visitors staying in hotels/guesthouses totalled 69,298, similar to that in 2014; those staying in 5-star hotels (49,381) dropped slightly by 0.9% while those staying in 4-5-star hotels (15,414) rose by 6.6%.
Visitors from Australia decreased by 12.8% year-on-year to 92,404, with overnight visitors (49,709) declining by 13.6%. The average length of stay of visitors rose by 0.2 day to 1.4 days; overnight visitors stayed an average of 2.4 days, up by 0.3 day. Total spending of visitors from Australia was MOP 127 million, down by 19.4% year-on-year. Per-capita spending of visitors decreased by 7.7% to MOP 1,375, of which Accommodation and Food & Beverage accounted for 38.0% and 28.0%. Number of Australian visitors staying in hotels/guesthouses decreased by 14.8% year-on-year to 41,697, dragged down by a 16.3% drop in those staying in 5-star hotels (29,394).
Visitors from the United Kingdom (UK) decreased by 1.3% year-on-year to 59,985, with same-day visitors (27,990) dropping by 4.4%. The average length of stay of visitors rose by 0.4 day year-on-year to 1.5 days; overnight visitors spent an average of 2.7 days, up by 0.8 day. Total spending of UK visitors amounted to MOP 80 million, down by 4.7% year-on-year; per-capita spending of visitors dropped by 3.5%
to MOP 1,329, of which Accommodation and Food & Beverage accounted for a significant share of 37.4%
and 31.1% respectively. UK visitors staying in hotels/guesthouses totalled 25,295, up by 10.0% year-on-year; those staying in 5-star hotels (18,669) took up 73.8% of the total.
