指某件事或人說話者覺得噁心、討厭,此處特指忸怩作態、故作嬌羞的女性。例 4 Fidel Castro 為古巴共產政權軍事強人,自一九六○年代古巴危機以來,長期與美 國敵對。作者先陳述自己扮作何人,接著描述自身的裝扮,透過這些描述反映扮 裝對象的事蹟或美國民眾心目中普遍的形象。譯文表達方面,例 1 與 2 主題較為 明確單純,譯文結構與內容與原文相去無多,筆者僅在姓名前加上「菲律賓前總 統夫人」、「旅館業女強人」,概略提示讀者此一人物的身分,至於相關事蹟,亦可 從後續對作者裝扮的描述中窺知一二。例 4 的卡斯楚也比照前二例,加上「古巴 軍事強人」表明其身分。此外,由於作者還以雪茄、吉普車…等來突顯卡斯楚的 形象,更以 ”Castro Oil red dressing” 暗喻共產赤色政權,表達時如何兼顧這些意 象也構成相當的困難,最後譯為「卡斯楚牌紅油沙拉醬」,一方面兼顧原文詞意,

也保留紅色的意象。例 3 的扮裝主題並非知名人士,而是泛指言行舉止具有某些 特色的女性,筆者綜合友人與上下文提供的訊息,即刻聯想台灣特有的檳榔西施,

兩者同樣形象鮮明,對於譯文讀者來說最為淺顯易懂,然而譯文最後並未將原文 的概念轉換為譯文讀者熟悉的檳榔西施。筆者主要考量原文文本的整體背景已設 定在美國社會中,為與整體場景敘述協調,不宜出現台灣社會特有的人事地物,

因而採取較為中性的詞語以解釋方式,傳達原文 ”valley girl” 的形象。

五、作者的敘述與風格

作者的敘述風格與修辭、文體相近,之前已探討的對等句法與各式文體,以 語言的型式為主。此處主要針對其他兩項與語意有關的寫作方式加以探討。

(一)

以關鍵字詞貫穿全文或在某些段落重複出現的寫作方式,亦是本書作者的一 項寫作風格。這類關鍵字詞儘管型式一致,但置於不同上下文,語意未必全然相 同,指涉的範圍對象也會有所變化,表達時除了顧慮型式的呼應,也不能忽略語

意的微調。以下舉第一章之 ”Wild thing” 為例說明。
