Do you know a person, though, who doesn't eat enough or who is dieting to an extreme? Maybe you know someone who eats too much? If you do, that individual might be suffering from an eating disorder. There are several kinds of eating disorders but they all include an unhealthy fixation on body weight and shape and the act of weight control through unhealthy means.

四、篇章結構 (10%)

William Faulkner is today recognized as one of America’s greatest writers on the basis of a body of novels that so convincingly portray the culture of the South in the years following the Civil War, when its citizens were overcome by grief and defeat and were struggling to take their place in a changing world. __61__

Have you ever heard of the term body image? Your body image is unique to you. It's how you see your appearance, how you feel about your appearance, and how comfortable you are with yourself. Your body image can affect how you eat. Those suffering from eating disorders have distorted body images. They don't see themselves as they really are. Though Faulkner was praised by some critics and reviewers during the first part of

his career, his novels did not sell well and he was considered a fairly marginal author. __62__ Throughout this period, he continued to write, though his novels were generally categorized as regional writing and were not widely appreciated.

There are three common eating disorders - anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that involves extreme weight loss caused by self-starvation. While the average teenager consumes around 2,500 calories a day, the individual suffering from anorexia nervosa may only take in a few hundred.

__63__ The Portable Faulkner was published in that year by Viking Press; two years later he was elected to the prestigious National Academy of Arts and Letters; he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1949. __64__ His success helped him make a fortune and enabled him to take up the life of a southern gentleman, including horseback riding and fox hunting. __65__

Bulimia nervosa also involves the preoccupation with body weight. However, with this eating disorder the individual binges, or eats a great amount of food in one sitting,

(5)

and then vomits or uses laxatives to get rid of it. In this case, while the average teenager consumes around 2,500 calories a day, a teenager with bulimia might consume 20,000 calories during a binge.

Binge eating disorder involves a sufferer who frequently binges but doesn't vomit or use laxatives to get rid of the food. A person who suffers from this eating disorder might feel guilt and shame and have above-normal body weight.

There is help for these disorders. Help from a physician is essential to deal with the physical consequences of these disorders. Psychological therapy is also important to understand what is behind the disorder. Finally, it must be a priority to engage in nutritional counseling to promote healthy eating behaviors. Very often, though, those suffering from eating disorders deny there is any problem. Therefore, if you believe someone does have an eating disorder, encourage him or her to get help. If that doesn't work, get a trusted adult involved.

66. Which word means to eat a great amount of food in one sitting? (A) Binge. (B) Vomit. (C) Diet. (D) Starve. 67. Which of the following is NOT true?

(A) Those suffering from eating disorders have distorted body images. (B) All eating disorders are related to an unhealthy fixation on body weight.

(C) An individual suffering from anorexia nervosa often consumes 2,500 calories a day.

(D) Our body image is how we see our appearance and how comfortable we are with ourselves.

68. Which of the following is NOT required in the treatment of eating disorders? (A) A psychological therapist. (B) A nutrition counselor.

(C) A trusted adult. (D) A physician.
