Globalism and the Politics of
Place
A distinguished critic of contemporary culture will discuss some of the political ramifications of the growing tension between global economic trends and a countervailing 'place-consciousness' in a lecture at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on 15 May.
"Globalism and the Politics of Place", by Prof Arif Dirlik, will
explore the significance of social and political movements that take as their goal the salvaging and reconstruction of specific places during a time of rampant global capitalism.
"While the affirmation of place is not novel, it has acquired a new significance under conditions of global capitalism, which both undermines and produces place-consciousness," says Prof Dirlik. "Places real or imagined provide a counterpoint to the abstraction of life under capitalism, and critical perspective on the kinds of
knowledge favored in capitalist modernity."
Prof Arif Dirlik is professor of history at Duke University and a visiting professor in the Division of Humanities at HKUST. He is the author of wide-ranging studies of the phenomenon of global
capitalism, including The Postcolonial Aura: Third World Criticism in the Age of Global Capitalism and After the Revolution: Waking to Global Capitalism.
Prof Dirlik's presentation is a Distinguished Lecture sponsored by the School of Humanities and Social Science at HKUST.
