SHENZHEN-HK RESEARCH CENTER TO OPEN
A new R&D center for high-tech production, incubation, training and executive education has been established in Shenzhen, thanks to a tripartite partnership among the Shenzhen Municipal Government, Peking University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).
The three parties signed an agreement on the establishment in Shenzhen of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Industrial, Educational and Research Center in mid-August. The agreement was signed by Li Zibin, Mayor of Shenzhen; Ren Yanshen, Council Chairman of Peking University; and Prof Chia-Wei Woo, President of HKUST.
The Center will serve as a base for innovative research, incubation of technology-based enterprises and executive training through close collaboration among the academia, government and industry. The total investment for the Center is 80 million yuan. Eight projects have already signed up with the Center. These cover biotechnology, fingerprint technology, integrated circuit systems, web translation services, intelligent traffic control systems, computer-related automation systems, coastal ecosystem management and MBA training. The CenterÕs permanent headquarters will be located in ShenzhenÕs Hi-tech Industrial Zone, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2000.
To offer executive training for senior managers and public administrators, the two universities will jointly establish the Graduate School for Senior Executives and Management. As a first step towards this end, Peking UniversityÕs Guanghua School of Management has admitted its first class of part-time MBA students in Shenzhen this year.
The Center is an important development of the strategic academic alliance between Peking University and HKUST.
