Maestro Sculpts Sir S Y Chung Portrait
World-renowned sculptor Prof Anthony Stones today (18 March 2005) created a portrait of Dr the Hon Sir Sze Yuen Chung, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Court of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).
Prof Stones is attending HKUST in his capacity as Y K Pao Distinguished Visiting Artist and HKUST Artist-in-Residence from 14 to 20 March 2005. His portrait of Dr Chung was the highlight of today's public lecture cum demonstration, entitled "Genesis of a Sculpture".
At the demonstration, Prof Stones sculpted a clay portrait of Dr Chung, who is also Founding Chairman of the University Council, former Convenor of the SAR Executive Council and a pre-eminent figure in public life. The portrait will be cast in bronze and displayed on campus as a tribute to Dr Chung's contribution to the founding of HKUST. The 71-year-old Prof Stones, who resides in Oxford, England, is renowned for his commemorative statues and portrait bronzes of eminent figures, including a 2002 depiction of Queen Elizabeth II on horseback. Among his many acclaimed works are the 2001 statue of the Roman Emperor Nerva that graces Gloucester city center in Britain, the sculpture of Seven Pacific Explorers exhibited at the Seville Expo 1992, and a life-size bronze statue of Captain Cook installed at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London. His portrait works of historical figures, scholars, poets, scientists and actors are held in public and private collections across the world, including Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Ireland, and the US.
Prof Stones is a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and former President of the Society of Portrait Sculptors (1999 to 2004). A Visiting Professor at Nanjing University and Tsinghua University, Prof Stones also sculpted a life-size bronze statue of celebrated Chinese meteorologist Tu Changwang, unveiled last year at the China Meteorological Administration in Beijing.
