By Dr Chia-Ting Chao, Director of Fooyin University Hospital Cardiovascular Research Institute
University Hospital in Donggang ,
was established more than fifty years
ago. Because it was built during the era of the
baby-boomer generation, it focused mainly on
and children's medicine. However, as
living conditions improved , diet and living habits
were gradually Western ized . Over the years, the
average age of the population has been
increasing , while the birth rate has been
decreasing. As a result, the population has
become progressively older, which has meant a The aging population and our continually
concomitant increase in the number of advancing society have increasingly prompted
cardiovascular patients. To fulfill the needs of the people to pursue a healthy life and better medical
population by following modern medical trends care. According to statistics from the Organization
and solving the problem of a deficiency of medical for Economic Cooperation and Development
resources in southern Taiwan, a modern (OECD), a positive linear relationship exists
Cardiovascular Research Institute has been between medical care expenditure of member
established at Fooyin University Hospital. citizens and Gross National Product (GNP); this
development in Taiwan fits into the global trend.
In the early stages of Fooyin University According to recent statistics produced by the
Hospital's development, we encountered a lot of Department of Health diseases of the circulatory
difficulties and challenges; small things like clinical system are among the ten leading causes of
development and expansion; and big things like death, and rank higher than in previous years;
the integration of various departments in the average individual medical expenditure on the
whole institution. All of this required new plans. circulatory system was also found to be higher
In May 2006, new wards specialized for the than the leading causes of death in other disease
cardiovascular department were planned; rotatory categories! Therefore, the hospital has applied a
cardiac catheterization was installed in June, and lot of effort and manpower to the medical care of
both cardiovascular wards and a cardiac patients with cardiovascular diseases. The
catheterization room were opened in July. development of the Fooyin University Hospital
Cardiovascular Research Institute is aimed at
specialized clinic and wards, but it also owns a complete and functional , non-invasive cardiac examination room and catheterization room for correct diagnosis and ideal treatment.
Pursue advanced
facilities
• The first rotational angiographic system (Allura Xp FD10R, Philips Inc. Netherlands) in Taiwan for cardiovascular catheterization examination .
• The first 3DCA workstation with Allura Xp FD10 R (Philips Inc. Netherlands) in Taiwan for accurate localization and instant measurement of the size of CAD lesions and their geometric structure, improving the serious disadvantage of conventional cardiac catheterization imaging.
• The most advanced EPS examination device (EPS320BR EP stimulator System, Micropace Inc. USA) combined with 128 channels PrucaR Polygraphy (GE Inc. USA) to perform the most advanced cardiac arrhythmia examination and tachycardia catheter ablation .
• The latest 40 Echocardiography is equipped with 40 Color Doppler Echocardiography (Vivid 7 dimensionR, GE Inc. USA) and Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE); it is the only device in Taiwan that provides Color Doppler Echocardiography for blood flow and cardiac tissues . The Cardiovascular Research Institute has become a regular place for Echocardiography, and is the only institute in Taiwan that combines cardiac tissue Color Doppler Echocardiography with drug stress echocardiography (Dobutamine stress echocardiograph) for the diagnosis of angina pectoris (myocardial infarction).
• The latest ECG and ECG management system (Muse system, GE Inc. USA), combined with the Spectral-analysis ECG device developed by the institute (Dynacardia Inc. USA), are used to perform 15-lead ECG examination (conventional 12-lead ECG), 3D Vector ECG, Spectral analysis ECG, 3D vector spectral analysis ECG, Signal Average ECG, Late potential analysis ECG, and build an ECG database for the local population (healthy population) and patients at universities and hospitals. The database will be well managed for analysis, and will be compared with overseas data to obtain valuable data on population differences and special features of ECG signals.
• The latest ICU monitoring system, the Clinical Information System, and the first institutional cardiovascular specialized ward (using US GE Clinical Information Center) have been established. The complete ECG management system (Muse system, GE Inc. USA) in the Cardiovascular Resear Institute involves the f irst integrated 15-lead ECG (or conventional 12-lead ECG) device for patients, 15-lead (or conventional 12-lead) exercise ECG , 24-hour Holter ECG , ICU monitoring system for ECG signals, and a cardiovascular ward for analysis and database management.

computerized tomographic scan, the most
advanced EPS 3D localization guiding system,
and a rotatory coronary imaging system are instantly integrated. Meanwhile, an Intracoronary Vascular Ultrasonographic System and an
Intracardiac echocardiographic system were
planned to introduce to the institute; a cardiac imaging integration system was purchased to
combine EPS signal, echocardiography,
coronary artery imaging, and cardiac CT
imaging. After complete establishment of the
integration system for cardiac images and
signals, the diagnosis, treatment prescription,
and prognostic identification of the cardiovascular specialists will be greatly improved.
Providing medical service of the highest quality is the long-term core value we pursued in relation to cardiac catheterization. Our team from the Cardiovascular Research Institute faced a series of challenges and our specialists pursued further education in the top cardiovascular hospitals in the US and Japan; the latest concepts and techniques were brought back to the institute for application and improvement. To continue
improving medical service quality, the
Cardiovascular Research Institute cooperates with the research center of Philip Inc. in the
Netherlands, looking for ways to improve on the
64-slice computerized tomographic scan for cardiac imaging application in the catheterization
room . With the continuing advancements in
medicine, we genuinely hope to collect all the
best techniques worldwide based on the good
foundation we have established , and tirelessly
commit our efforts toward roving medical care
for patients with cardi r and circulatory
