1. Regional Conference on Stock Markets in HK, Chinese Mainland and Taiwan The conference was held at UST between 26 and 27/8. Over 20 press organisations sent representatives to cover this event. Details will be carried in the next media report. Last week, four more papers carried reports announcing the coming event, including the Huanan Jingji Journal (23/8), South China Morning Post (22/8),HK Economic Journal (22/8), and the New HK Economic Times (22/8). 2. Second International Hi-Tech Show '93
Seven papers carried reports or supplements on this show. Prof. S.D. Kung was one of the VIP's who inaugurated the opening
ceremony on 19 August, and Prof. Roland Chin of the Computer Science Department gave a speech during the exhibition. The
papers were HK Economic Journal, Ta Kung Pao, Wen Wei Po, Sing Pao Daily News, Ming Pao Daily News, Sing Tao Daily, and Wah Kiu Yat Po.
3. UST is among the New Science Stamps
The General Post Office will sell a set of four new stamps with the theme of science and technology. HKUST is depicted in one of them. The United Daily News (20/8), Ta Kung Pao (20/8), and the HK Daily News (20/8) reported on this. The stamps will be sold on the 8th September.
4. Man and Market in Modern China
The Wen Wei Po (20/8) and the HK Commercial Daily (20/8) carried our press release on the seminar "Man and Market in Modern China", given by Dr. David Faure of Oxford University, and presented by the Division of Humanities.
5. Prof Gary W. Heinke receives new Appointment
Prof Gary W. Heinke has been appointed Director of Institute for Environmental Studies. Sing Tao Daily (23/8) and Wen Wei Po (19/8) carried our press release which announced this new appointment. 6. Free Lecture to Allay Landslide Fears
A lecture on the causes of landslides and on measures that can be taken to prevent their occurence will be given by Dr. K.M. Lee of the Civil and Structural Engineering Department at the HK Science Museum on 29 August. The Wah Kiu Yat Po (19/8) and New Evening Post (17/8) reported this forthcoming event.
7. Science Park, Phase II
Director-General of Industry, Mr Denise Yue said that the
feasibility study of the Phase One project of the Science Park was finished. Whether there need to be a Phase Two or not for the Science Park is to be decided within one or two months. He
mentioned in his speech that HKUST would educate a new generation of hi-tech personnel. He gave this speech in a donation ceremony on 20 August. This was reported in Sing Tao Daily, the HK
Commercial Daily, Ming Pao Daily News, and the Oriental Daily News, on 21 August.
8. Efficiency and Equality
Dr Joseph Lin's article on this topic was printed in the HK Economic Journal on 18 August.
9. Direct Sales
The magazine HK Economic Monthly, August issue carried a report on direct sales. Visiting Prof. Gerald Albaum was invited to give comments on this retail method.
10. The Rise and Fall of Stock Exchange
Dr Kuo-Chiang Wei of the Department of Finance and Economics wrote this article which was printed in the HK Economic Journal (19/8). 11. Importance of Multi-media
A student from the School of Business and Management wrote an article about the importance of multi-media as a tool of the modern enterprise. The article was printed in the HK Economic Times (18/8).
