HKUST SCIENCE SCHOOL TO ORGANIZE FIRST SUMMER CAMP
FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS
Two hundred Form 6 students will explore the world of science and get a feel of university learning at the first Science Summer Camp to be held on the campus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 7 to 11 July 1999.
ÒOur summer camp will cultivate secondary studentsÕ interest in science by introducing them to various intriguing science topics that are not covered in their examination syllabus,Ó said Kwan-Lun Lui, second-year Physics student and Chairperson of the Science Summer Camp Organizing Committee.
ÒMany secondary students seem to be losing interest in science subjects, fearing that their career prospects will be limited if they pursue science studies at university. The fact is that a science degree will teach them analytical skills applicable in all fields,Ó said Lui.
The campers are selected at random, not by their academic results. ÒThe main objective of the camp is to promote popular science, not recruiting potential entrants. We want every participant to have a chance to understand the programs on offer at HKUST, visit our facilities and enjoy campus life, regardless of their academic performance,Ó said Lui.
Science lectures, laboratory sessions, campus tours, mass games and fun activities are among the campÕs activities.
This is the first time a summer camp is held at the School of Science level, at the initiative of the students.
