STEPHEN KAM CHUEN CHEONG HALL NAMED
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has named a postgraduate hall the Stephen Kam Chuen Cheong Hall in recognition of the late Mr Stephen Kam-chuen Cheong’s outstanding contribution to the University.
The event also recognized a generous donation from the Stephen Kam Chuen Cheong Memorial Education Fund. Mrs Joan Cheong, wife of Mr Cheong, and Dr Alice Lam, Chairman of the Trustees of the Fund, jointly officiated at the ceremony today.
Mr Cheong was involved in the establishment of the University from as early as 1986 when the Planning Committee for the Third University (HKUST) was formed. He made enormous contributions to the development of the University, particularly in the recruitment of overseas academics. As a founding member of the University Council and Chairman of the Council’s Appointments Committee, he devoted a substantial amount of his time to the recruitment of the best possible candidates for senior faculty positions.
The University will make use of the Stephen Kam Chuen Cheong Memorial Fund to support its education and research initiatives. The Fund was established in 1993 by Mr Cheong’s family to provide local students with scholarships for their tertiary education studies in Hong Kong. In March this year, the trustees converted the fund into two one-off donations of HK$8.3 million, one of which was dedicated to HKUST.
