(B) Take a rabbit’s foot.

(C) In addition to the above superstitions for good luck, some customs that have long been practiced grow out of people’s fears.

(D) However, there is no scientific proof of this superstition.

(AB) Many people stick to these beliefs because they tend to superstitiously associate one event with another.

A superstition is a belief, and it means that one event can result in—or prevent—another, especially when the two are in no wayrelated. 51 Rabbits, unlike most other animals, touch the ground with their back feet first when they are running. Many Westerners thus think

that this is unusual and regard a rabbit’s foot as a lucky sign. 52 Knocking on wood is another similar example. Americans are used to saying “knock on wood” or actually doing so to prevent something bad from happening when they have just said it won’t occur or hasn’t occurred. This is because they are afraid that tree spirits would affect their luck. 53 54 . Most people practice these customs to deal with the unknown. In Taiwan, for instance, the word for the number “four” sounds like the word for “death.”

Because of this association, the number “four” has long been viewed as an unlucky number by most Taiwanese people. The reason why people in some Western countries often say “Bless you” when someone sneezes is also based on superstition. 55 Nowadays, some old superstitions are practiced in new ways. People also follow the superstition-based customs to help them face future uncertainties.

Tuna, mackerels, and billfishes have made streamlining into an art form. Their bodies are sleek and compact. The body shapes of tuna, in fact, are nearly ideal from an engineering point of view. Most species lack scales over most of the body, making it smooth and slippery. The eyes lie flush with the body and do not protrude at all. They are also covered with a slick, transparent lid that reduces drag. The fins are stiff, smooth, and narrow, qualities that also help cut drag. When not in use, the fins are tucked into special grooves or depressions so that they lie flush with the body and do not break up its smooth contours. Airplanes retract their landing gear while in flight for the same reason.

Tuna, mackerels, and billfishes have even more sophisticated adaptations than these to improve their hydronamics. The long bill of marlins, sailfishes, and swordfish probably helps them slip through the water. Many supersonic aircraft have a similar needle at the nose.

Many travelers prefer to buy foreign currency in their own countries before they leave for convenience. Arriving in a foreign country can be a confusing experience, even for

seasoned globetrotters. By buying your currency beforehand, you can become acquainted with

the value and appearance of the notes and coins, as well as avoid any exchange commissions applied by foreign banks for the conversion of foreign currency. It is more convenient to have some local currency with you immediately upon arrival in a foreign country for the inevitable initial expenses, such as taxis, meals, and tips, as you arrive, you can be ready to go without wasting time lining up to exchange your money.

Many modern travelers use automatic teller machines (ATMs) to obtain local cash when traveling abroad. ATMs are easy to use. You can use the same card to access your account as you use at home. One drawback is the hefty fees charged by both the local bank and your home bank. The fees for foreign exchange transactions are generally higher than they are for domestic transactions. The cinema did not emerge as a form of mass consumption until its technology evolved from the initial “peepshow” format to the point where images were projected on a screen in a darkened theater. In the peepshow format, a film was viewed through a small opening in a machine that was created for that purpose. Thomas Edison’s peepshow device, the Kinetoscope, was introduced to the public in late 19th

century. It was designed for Kinetoscope parlors, or arcades, which contained only a few individual machines and permitted only one customer to view a short, 50-foot film at any one time. The first Kinetoscope parlors contained five machines. For the price of 25 cents, customers moved from machine to machine to watch five different films.

Edison refused to develop projection technology, reasoning that if he made and sold projectors, then exhibitors would purchase only one machine, a projector, from him instead of several. However, Exhibitors wanted to maximize their profits, which they could do more

readily by projecting a handful of films to hundreds of customers at a time and by charging 25

to 50 cents admission. After the opening of first Kinetoscope parlor in 1894, Orville and Charles Francis Jekins perfected projection devices. These early projection devices were used in legitimate theaters, local town halls and fairgrounds to show films to a mass audience.
