To experience the stunning beauty of Taiwan, I recommend the Formosa 900. Motivated teams set off from cities all over Taiwan on this 900-km round-the-island bicycle trip. Novices might prefer to just ride for a few days while veterans bike around the island. This past year, I started down the coast from Taipei. The first few days left my muscles aching, but the reward was the beautiful scenery from the top of the Central Mountain Range. With so little traffic, I felt a million miles away from the hurried pace of the city. The trip was a great physical challenge; much of the focus was on pedaling to get to the next stop. At the same time, I had the chance to soak up culture and history along the way. More importantly, I developed strong friendships and a profound appreciation for everything Taiwan has to offer. (4-p. 46-48)

(A) 7. What does the “900” in Formosa 900 stand for?

(A) Distance of the trip. (B) Times of cycling. (C) Number of teams. (D) Number of towns. (D) 8. What can we conclude about the author from the passage?

(A) He is a fan of big cities. (B) He prefers walking to biking. (C) He usually bikes alone. (D) He enjoys the beauty of nature. Paragraph B

In 2013, Malala Yousafzai became the youngest person ever nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. One year earlier, Malala faced certain death as she was shot on her way to school. It all started when the Taliban, an extremist Muslim group, banned girls from going to school in 2009. Malala was only 11, and she started a diary online for the BBC about her struggle to get an education. Her identity was compromised, and the Taliban attacked. After recovering in England, Malala became even more passionate about education for girls, using her celebrity to further her cause. She promoted a United Nations initiative to give all children primary education. She met with President Barack Obama and asked him to use education to fight terrorism instead of military strikes. Malala proves to be an inspiration to anyone who has been judged by race or gender. (5-p. 14-17)

(B) 9. Why was Malala shot?

(A) She won a Nobel Prize. (B) She was going to school. (C) She worked for the Taliban. (D) She was teaching little girls. (B) 10. What did Malala and President Obama talk about?

(A) Working with the BBC.

(B) A different way to deal with terrorism. (C) Finding the people who attacked her.
