Science Meets Photography in HKUST exhibition

24-09-2015

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Library holds an exhibition to display the artworks of a world-renowned photographer Dr Tin Man Lee, who was awarded the Grand Prize in the highly

prestigious Nature’s Best Photography Windland Smith Rice International Competition in 2013, out of 25,000 entries from 50 countries.

Titled “Natural World, Cultural Elegance: A Photography Exhibition by Tin Man Lee”, this exhibition features 48 stunning wildlife photos along with multimedia displays, including Nature’s winning piece “Pouncing Bear”, which was exhibited in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C., USA.

“I am very excited and honored to have my frst solo exhibition at HKUST. I love animals and photography, and I hope my photos can raise the awareness of the beauty of nature around us,” said Dr Tin Man Lee.

Raised and educated in Hong Kong, Dr Tin Man Lee received a full scholarship to University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) after attaining 10 As in the HKCEE. President Prof Tony Chan, who had taught at UCLA, was Tin Man Lee’s PhD thesis advisor on biomedical image processing. Dr Tin Man Lee now resides in the U.S. and is managing the imaging centre of Amgen, a global leading biopharmaceutical company. With his deep love for and curiosity about wildlife, he combines his professionalism in image processing with creativity to capture artistic wildlife images which have never been seen before. He has won numerous awards, including the Top 10 Award from the North America Nature Photography Association (NANPA), and his photo “Fish and Bear Claw” was chosen as the cover for the annual NANPA contest magazine, Expressions.

This exhibition is jointly presented by the HKUST Library and the Publishing Technology Center to celebrate the University’s 25th Anniversary. Dr Tin Man Lee will give talks to share his precious life experiences on school, work and photography. An exhibition catalog and postcards made from pictures in the exhibition will be published as mementos of the occasion.
