The Institute for Envirorimental-Studies Is Established at HKUST The establishment of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IES) was announced today by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
The mission of the Institute, in collaboration with participating academic departments, is:

to carry out interdisciplinary applied research on envirorimental problems, and to develop interdisciplinary environmental education programmes at the graduate level, for professional continuing education, and for liaison with secondary school students and teachers.

“We are conscious of the fact that all human activitiei’which bring about development impose changes on nature and affect the environm*ent,” said Professor Chia-We/ Woo, Vice-Chancellor and President of HKUST, at the inauguration ceremony for IES. “We feelit is the technologist’s responsibility to contribute to development while keeping its adverse effects to a minimum.*’
Professor Gary Heinke’, the Institute’s first Director, stated that the Institute will provide . for effective collaboration among the several university departments directly involved with environmental studies. It will assist government and industry in the solution of the urgent environmental challenges facing Hong Kohg and her surrounding region. Currently the Institute has about 20 research projects in progress with a total investment of about $15 million.
The Institute will be guided by an external Advisory Board consisting of 12 senior leaders from industry, business and government. Internally, a programme committee of senior academics will oversee the work of the Institute and its working groups.
During the ceremony, Mr Malcolm J. Matthews, Managing Director of the Hong Kong and China Gas Co., Ltd., discussed the environment from an industrial perspective, while the Hon. Peter H.Y. Wong, Member of the Legislative Council, spoke from a legislative perspective.
Experts and academics from HKUST also made presentations on Marine Siology and
Envrionmen t, Water and Environment, lndus trial -Waste Minimisa tion and Air Rhtion
and Control.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will host the
inauguration ceremony establishing the Institute for Environmental Studies
(IES) this Thursday.
