25/09/2009 Hong Kong Children Excel in Logical Deduction World Class Tests in Mathematics and Problem Solving administered by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have found that students aged 8 to 11 performed particularly well in "logical deduction" type questions. The Tests, conducted in April 2009, also found a significantly higher proportion of students getting distinction in the Mathematics paper compared to those who did the test a year ago. In April 2008, 38% of the students aged 8-11 achieved distinction, while in April 2009 the figure rose to 51%. "Although we have observed an apparent improvement in the Mathematics paper results for the April 2009 Tests in the 8-11 age group compared with last year, we should remember that the students who took these Tests make up a possibly biased sample of the total student population in Hong Kong. So

we probably should not take the findings as representing the entire student population in Hong Kong,"said Prof Edmund Chiang of HKUST's Mathematics Department, who has analyzed the results of the World Class Tests in the past years.

"On the other hand, the study suggests that there is room for improvement in the students' performance in some "designing and planning" type questions in the Problem Solving paper for the 8-11 age group. The results point to a possible need for Hong Kong to focus more on "designing and planning" type of problem solving skills among young children," Prof Chiang added.

The Tests have also found that within both the 8-11 age group and the 12-14 age group, the older children did better than the younger ones. Meanwhile, there was no significant gender difference in the performance of the boys and the girls.

For the 8 -11 age group, 827 students (male 555, female 272) took the Mathematics paper, and 431 students (male 290, female 141) took the Problem Solving paper. For the 12-14 age group, 362 students (male 231, female 131) took the Mathematics paper, and 277 students (male 179, female 98) took the Problem Solving paper.

Since the launch of the World Class Tests in 2001 by the British Government's Department for Education and Skills for assessing and nurturing gifted youngsters, the Tests have become an international benchmark for Mathematics and Problem Solving. The questions in the tests are designed by professors of renowned universities in the UK, USA and Australia.

The Tests were first introduced in Hong Kong in 2004, and since then, nearly 27,000 students from about 400 primary and secondary schools have taken the Tests. In 2008 HKUST was commissioned to promote and administer the Tests in the Asian region.

World Class Tests are organized throughout the world in April and November each year, and the results announced today are of the April 2009 tests conducted at various test sites in Hong Kong.
