CENTRE FOR DISPLAY RESEARCH TO OPEN AT HKUST

A new research facility that promises to boost an important segment of Hong Kong’s electronics industry will be inaugurated on 17 January (Wednesday) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Performing the honors at the ceremony will be Mrs Regina Ip Lau Suk-Yee, Director-General of Industry, and Prof. Chia-Wei Woo, President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

The Centre for Display Research (CDR) will undertake research and development activities aimed at improving the liquid crystal displays made and used by Hong Kong manufacturers.

Products such as notebook computers, personal data banks, camcorders, portable TVs, videophones, projection displays and handheld games all depend on advances in the quality and reliability of display technology.

Established with a $14.6 million grant from the Hong Kong Government’s Industry Department, the Centre for Display Research will serve as a central R&D laboratory for local industry. It will also train students with the technical skills in LCD manufacturing needed by local companies.

CDR facilities include an LCD prototyping line complete with up-to-date equipment for modem LCD manufacturing and testing, including instruments that have been unavailable to many local manufacturers. When fully functional, this clean-room facility will be capable of making TN, STN and active matrix displays.

The inaugural ceremony will be held in the Foyer (7/F) of the Academic Building at HKUST at 3:30 pm. It will be preceded by a reception beginning at 3 pm. A tour of the laboratory will be conducted by Prof. Kwok following the ceremony.
