Dr Bertram E Shi, an Associate Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has become one of the youngest researchers to be elected Fellow by the prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

At the age of 35, Dr Shi was conferred the honor of Fellow this year in recognition of his contributions to the analysis, implementation and application of cellular neural networks. The average age of IEEE members, excluding student members, is 46.

Dr Shi received the award at the 2001 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems in Sydney last week.

The grade of Fellow is one of the most prestigious honors of the IEEE, conferred only by invitation to those with unusual distinction and an extraordinary record of accomplishments. Under a rigorous evaluation process, fewer than one out of every 1,000 IEEE members are awarded this honor each year.

Dr Shi joined HKUST’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1994. He is also a member of the Human Language Technology Center at the University. He received his BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1987 and 1988 respectively. In 1994, he received his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley.

The IEEE is a non-profit, technical professional association with more than 350,000 individual members in 150 countries. It is a leading authority in areas ranging from computer engineering, biomedical technology and telecommunications, to electric power, aerospace and consumer electronics, among others. The origin of IEEE dates back to 1884. Over the years, the Institute has advanced the theory and application of electrotechnology and allied sciences, and has served as a catalyst for technological innovation.
