ExDerts to Discuss the Human Brain at HKUST
The 15th Meeting of the Hong Kong Society of Neurosciences will be held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) from 8 to 9 April, 1994.
Dr Karl Tsim, Lecturer in the Department of Biology at HKUST and one of the organisers of the meeting, says, “The United States has targeted the years 1990-99 as ‘the Decade of Brain’ to promote research on the brain. ”
“In recent years, the world has witnessed extraordinary advances in neuroscience in terms of how the brain develops and maintains itself; how it acquires and processes information; how it regulates the bodily functions that include effective and cognitive behaviours such as emotion, learning and thinking; and what is altered in neurological and mental disorders, and
in traumatic injuries. Among the various research areas, molecular
neurobiology is a significant subject for development.”
Topics for discussion at the meeting include neuroanatomy,
neuropharmacology, neurophysiology and molecular neurobiology. .
“About 100 participants are anticipated, ” says Dr Tsim. “The
majority of them are academics from the three local universities while others are coming from Mainland China and Taiwan. The Department of Biology at HKUST has established a strong programme in neuroscience. We will have an excellent opportunity to share research results and to plan future collaborations.”
