HKUST Holds Donation Presentation

Ceremony and inaugurates the Hang Lung

Center for Organizational Research

HKUST will receive a generous donation of HK$ 20 million from the Chan Tseng-Hsi Foundation and Dr and Mrs Thomas Chen at a ceremony on 15 January (Thursday) . The donation will support the construction of HKUST's University Annex.

The ceremony will be followed by the inauguration of the Hang Lung Center for Organizational Research in the School of Business and Management.

Dr Sze Yuen Chung, Chairman of the HKUST Council; Mr Ronnie C. Chan, Chairman of Hang Lung Development Co. Ltd. and a member of the HKUST Council; Mrs Chan Tseng-Hsi; Dr and Mrs Thomas Chen; and Professor Chia-Wei Woo, President of HKUST, will be present at both ceremonies.

A creative town-gown partnership is at the core of the Hang Lung Center for Organizational Research, established to promote a better understanding of organizational management in Chinese cultural settings.

"The Hang Lung Center will build a bridge between academic researchers and corporate managers," says Prof Anne Tsui, Head of the Management of Organizations Department and founding director of the new center. "We intend to provide a forum where dedicated efforts can be made to illuminate the problems that managers face in Greater China."

Included within this purview are management practices in Chinese and multinational firms doing business in China, as well as Chinese companies doing business globally.

Mr Ronnie C. CHAN is an enthusiastic supporter of the Center's goals. "The 55 million overseas Chinese have been economically successful over many decades," he explains. "Yet there is very little, if any, systematic research on their management style and other success factors. The Center should help overseas Chinese businesses improve their chances for further success, and will assist the mainland in developing managers for her many state-owned as well as other enterprises."
