In the intensive care unit, I read a story. An infant has existed in a “persistent vegetative state” __16.__ he choked on a balloon. His arteries were blocked, preventing oxygen from being transported to his brain. The __17.__ of the “vegetative state” is that only when a patient in a coma receives proper watering and fertilizer will he or she boom again. This, however, is far from the reality. It is almost impossible for this kind of patient to regain consciousness. One day, the father of this infant came to the ward. He disconnected the respirator __18.__ his son until the infant died. In the end, the father was arrested and charged with murder. I look around at the patients. Some of them will never draw an independent breath again. One woman has been __19.__ a respirator for nearly two months. Everyone is clueless __20.__ her health would fail so dramatically. Robert Frost was one of the greatest American poets of the twentieth century. He was a __24.__ Pulitzer Prize winner for Poetry. From his poems, said President John F. Kennedy, “Americans will forever gain joy and understanding.” His works have __25.__ to generations of readers. Most of his poems __26.__ nature and everyday events that explore deep aspects of human experience. “The Road Not Taken” is a fine example. When in England, Edward Thomas, Frost's friend, often chose routes at random to take a walk with Frost. However, he always complained that they could __27.__ even lovelier scenery if it had not been for his choice. This may have inspired Frost to write this poem, which captures the dilemma of human decisionmaking. In the poem, the speaker, a traveler, is to make a choice between two routes, a symbol of making a decision in life. The speaker chooses the less used one, knowing just as many people have probably taken it. He decides to walk the first road at a later time, although he knows that __28.__ is very small. In reality, the first road is not really different from the second one. We all have to make important decisions in life. However, once we make up our mind, there is no going back. People __29.__ trouble making important decisions about their future should read this poem. When it comes to medical care, many patients and doctors believe “more is better.” But what they do not realize is that overtreatment—too many scans, too many blood tests, too many __32.__—may pose harm. Sometimes a test leads you down a path to more and more testing, some of __33.__ may be invasive, or to treatment for things that should be left alone.

Terrence Power, for example, complained that after his wife learned she had Wegener’s

disease, an uncommon disorder of the immune system, they found it difficult to refuse testing __34.__ by her physician. The doctor insisted __35.__ office visits every three weeks, even when she was feeling well. In many ways, the capital city of the Netherlands is a cyclist’s heaven. Amsterdam __41.__ a large network of cycle paths, part of a system of 22,000 miles that stretch throughout the country. More than half—nearly 65%, in fact—of the city’s __42.__ cycles each day. Amazingly, almost 40% of all trips in Amsterdam are made by bicycles. In contrast, that number is a mere 2% in London. Today, with an estimated 880,000 bikes on its streets, Amsterdam is known as the bicycle capital of the world. An Amsterdam-based organization called BYCS helps to __49.__ cycling not only in the Netherlands but also all over the world. One of its successful programs is called the Bicycle Mayor program, which began in 2016. Bicycle Mayors are __50__ individuals who advocate for cycling around the world. The term “virtually reality” refers to the kind of interactive computer technology that produces an illusory three-dimensional world for the user. With virtual reality, the user can explore the inside of a volcano, go back in time to the Jurassic age and ride a dinosaur, or pilot a spacecraft to its landing on Venus. With its almost unlimited potential, virtual reality, first developed by VPL Research in Redwood, California, has now become the hottest thing in such areas as medicine, teaching, military training, and video games. It promises to forever alter entertainment as we have come to know it.

To escape from reality to virtual reality, the user simply puts on a headset, in which a pair of tiny liquid-crystal-display (LCD) TV screens creates stereoscopic images, with earphones producing high-fidelity sound to add to the illusion. In some versions, to interact with events in the computer-programmed world she sees, the user puts on a pair of gloves

equipped with optic-fiber sensors. With input from the headset and the gloves, the computer records every action and movement of the user, and changes the simulated world according to her perspective.

To make the vision convincing to the user, a special computer conducts computation at incredible speed for every picture frame, each frame consisting of a minimum of 340,000 pixels—the smallest individual picture element. In addition, there must be over 30 picture frames per second to ensure the smooth flow of the images into one another. Ideal effects are not yet attainable. Researchers can produce high quality pictures, but the speed becomes unnaturally slow. The user finds the images halting, as if in slow-motion. On the other hand, if natural speed is achieved, the visual effects are compromised, and the image is blurred.

51. The passage is mainly about _____.

(A) an interactive computer technology (B) imperfections of virtual reality (C) how to escape from boring reality (D) applied computer science

52. The author implies that, if there are fewer than 30 picture frames per second, the image _____.

(A) will switch to slow-motion (B) will be distorted out of shape (C) will fail to be smoothly connected (D) will still be sharp and in focus

53. The author mentions that, at the present level of technology, maintaining high-quality pictures in virtual reality would mean _____.

(A) more expensive TV’s (B) larger picture frame (C) lower speed (D) fewer pixels

54. The word compromised in the third paragraph most closely means _____. (A) agreed on (B) sacrificed (C) maintained (D) settled 55. A paragraph following the passage would most probably deal with _____.

(A) a definition of virtual reality

(B) current research to perfect virtual reality (C) personal computers

(D) artificial intelligence [B]

The increasing world population has been both a blessing and a curse. Between 1930 and 1975, global population increased from two to four billion persons. From 1975 to 2000, in increased to six billion. Now, in 2018, there are a total of 7.6 billion people in the world,

and counting. The sharpest increases have generally been in developing nations that are least able to provide food, education, and jobs for all.

Arguably, averting world famine depends on the relatively few countries able to export food; literally millions of hungry souls count on them. Many nations, like Indonesia and Thailand, now have effective population control programs, but the control of infectious diseases and an increase in the food supply have combined to encourage continued population growth.

Demographers vary widely in their estimates of the earth’s maximum sustainable population, but they all agree that population control is a necessity and that there are limits to the planet’s capacity. Excessive population density and overcrowding have been implicated in a variety of ills ranging from increased crime and pollution to environmental degradation and political instability. One of mankind’s most important challenges is to control the ticking population time bomb.

56. What is the main idea of the passage? (A) The blessings of the population increase (B) The problems of developing nation (C) The importance of the population issue (D) Mankind’s ability to feed itself.

57. In the second paragraph, the word averting is closest meaning to which of the following?

(A) controlling (B) avoiding (C) promoting (D) replacing

58. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a possible consequence of an uncontrollable increase in world population?

(A) Disruptions of governments (B) Dangerous food shortages (C) Increased level of crime (D) A wide range of new diseases 59. It can be inferred from the passage that population growth _____.

(A) is fastest in developing countries (B) is in line with demographic estimates (C) has reached the earth’s full capacity (D) first began increasing in 1930

60. The phrase the ticking population time bomb in the third paragraph suggests that _____.

(A) population increases may lead to war (B) time is running out on finding a solution (C) terrorists threaten people 24 hours a day

(D) the author has had extensive military experience [C]

What causes ocean tides? The same thing that causes the less well-known, but equally important bodily and atmospheric tides—the gravitational action of the moon and sun. At most seaside locations, though certainly not all, high water marks are twelve hours and twenty-five minutes apart. This, however, can vary significantly; certain places in the China Sea experience intervals of more than twenty-four hours between high water marks. As might be expected, low water marks occur at similar intervals.

At most places, on the average, the high water mark is about as much above the mean sea level as the succeeding low water mark is below it. The difference in level between high and low marks is called the range of the tide. The range of a tide may vary daily, and at most places it reaches a maximum once every two weeks. Tidal ranges vary greatly throughout the world. Many Pacific islands experience a range of less than two feet while the Bay of Fundy has a range exceeding fifty feet.

The swiftness of tidal currents also varies greatly from place to place. In British Columbia, Canada, the maximum current often exceeds ten knots per hour, while in most areas of Europe’s North Sea it rarely exceeds even a single knot. Sometimes, where a large river meets the tide, a large wave may travel up the river like a wall of water. This is called a bore. A race is a fast-moving current usually occurring near a headland separating two bays. 61. What is the main topic of the passage?

(A) Tidal ranges

(B) Worldwide tidal patterns

(C) The sun’s gravitational pull on the moon (D) The wide range of ocean currents

62. What can be inferred from the passage about atmospheric tides? (A) They are similar in origin to ocean tides.

(B) They are not as common as bodily tides. (C) They alter the moon’s gravitational pull. (D) They are not affected by the sun.

63. According to the passage, what is TRUE about some locations in the China Sea? (A) High water marks are extremely high.

(B) Low water marks very rarely occur.
