(B)Ophelia has the same viewpoint on technology as Lesley and Brian do. (C)Brian believes using technology wisely can help with children’s

education.

(D) Brian’s nine-year-old daughter learns a foreign language outside the classroom.

48. Which of the following is most likely what Nikki read in the magazine? B

(A)

(B)

(C) 國三英文 第 頁,共 6 頁

Basically, kids love playing outside. If you don’t let your kid hang out or interact with other kids, your kid may not be able to learn social skills, such as doing small talks, exchanging opinions, or knowing about how others feel. What’s worse, your kid may have trouble opening up to others, which could make your kid sick.

Why do traditional outdoor games matter? A study points out that playing

outdoors can help prepare your kid with abilities to deal with everyday tasks. Such abilities are like teamwork, observation, communication, or problem-solving. It’s possible that kids get some scratches, but getting hurt can be a lesson learned. Technology is supposed to bring people closer. However, it turns out that it has widened the distance between people. With the popularity of smartphones, some people even don’t talk at the dining table. Therefore, the term phubber came up to 3

Lesley W. says,

My answer is definitely yes. As a parent, who has a five-year-old son, I do think that technology prevents our kids from developing many kinds of skills. Here’s why. The time a child spends on an iPad is…

(1)…the time the child is not playing with his/her toys.

(2)…the time not spent having a quality conversation with his/her mom, dad, brother, or sister.

(3)…the time not spent playing with blocks. (4)…the time not spent on outdoor playing.

(5)…the time not spent learning how to share with friends. Brian A. says,

To this question, my answer is yes and no. It’s true that technology takes away chances for kids to learn outdoors and in groups. However, technology can be a great helper if you and your child use it wisely. Take my daughter for example. There are many educational apps from which she can learn much more than in a classroom, and the learning effect is beyond my imagination. My daughter, who is just nine, has picked up around fifty Japanese words, baked a pie for the four of us, and even designed an app herself! Nikki H. says,

Though I’m not a mom yet, I do agree with Lesley. To add to your point, I want to share what I read in a magazine the other day.

Traditional outdoor games, such as hide-and-seek, provide kids with useful everyday skills. When kids play hide-and-seek, they have to decide who plays the one to look for the others, find a perfect hiding place for themselves, and solve problems if some kids have fights or get hurt by accident.

Ophelia P. says,

Technology is not just damaging our kids but destroying the whole family! What I saw at the restaurant today really upset me. A little boy, who I guessed was an elementary school student, ate his pasta quietly at the table. His mom? Sitting across from him, she glued her eyes to the screen of her phone the whole time. His father was too busy playing some game to finish his meal. I felt very sorry for the kid. He just sat there for one and a half hours, watching his parents become slaves to technology. Parents should take on

responsibility to take care of their kids and set up a good example for them.

(A)A stronger mind. (B)Scientific observation. (C)Social responsibility. (D) Relationships.

國三英文 第 頁,共 6 頁 Classroom teaching isn’t enough for modern kids. When technology has become

so much better, teaching and learning should be in different forms to meet kids’ needs. Take LingoGo, a language learning app, for example. Kids learn a language anywhere they are, and for a real conversation, they can use online chatrooms.

There were two childhood friends, Harry and Bill. They went through school and college and even joined the army together. Then, a war broke out and they were fighting in the same unit. One night, they were attacked by the enemy. Bullets were flying all over. Out of the darkness came a voice, “Harry, please come and help me.” Harry knew the voice belonged to his childhood buddy, Bill. He asked the captain if he could go save him. The captain replied, “No, I can’t let you go. I’m already short-handed; I cannot afford to lose one more person. Besides, he doesn’t sound like he’s going to make it.” Then Harry kept silent.

electronics 電子產品 concern 擔憂 conclusion 結論

Tech Times April 3rd, 2016 With the creation of drones, the way our packages are delivered can be very different. Our team asked 1,080 online shoppers how interested they would be in drone delivery service (see Chart 1) and what kind of product they would be interested in receiving by drone (see Chart 2). After we gathered the data, what we found blew our mind.

As Chart 1 shows, 47% of the online shoppers we asked showed interest in the service, while 53% answered they were not interested. Why? That’s because Americans value privacy and safety more than convenience drones bring. Though rules for the use of drones have been set up, most Americans still have concerns about it. What’s more, among those who showed interest in drone delivery service, males took up 53%; among those who were not interested, females took up 59%. As our team guesses, that’s because males are more willing to give new things a try.

As Chart 2 shows, 27% of the online shoppers we asked were interested in having clothes delivered by drones, and 14% said they were interested in receiving electronics. Drone deliveries of products such as food and books interested 11% of the online shoppers. 10% of them said yes to medical items. To our surprise, clothes, electronics, food, and books have been the top online shopping choices of Americans for years, which matches as Chart 2 shows. We can draw a small conclusion that drone delivery service may not affect online shopping choices for clothes, electronics, food, and books.

This poem was written by one of the most famous rappers of the 1990’s, Tupac Shakur. People think of him as both a poet and a brilliant lyricist.

You leave footprints when you walk in the sand, the mud and when you’ve got wet feet. You also leave something called a carbon footprint. What is a carbon footprint? It’s commonly believed that fossil fuels, such as oil, gas, or coal, are responsible for most of the footprints. Truth be told, footprints can also be produced as you do daily activities. When you take a bus, turn on lights, buy some food, or even throw your trash away, you produce a certain amount of carbon dioxide (CO2).

One kilogram of CO2 can be added to your personal footprint if you do the following activities:

Traveling by public transportation (train or bus) a distance of 10 to 12 kilometers

Driving in your car a distance of 6 kilometers Flying on a plane a distance of 2.2 kilometers Using your computer for 32 hours

Body Making Exhibition

Body/Craft/Creativity “What is right to be done cannot be done too soon.”—Jane Austen, Writer What is craft? Crafts are the mixture of human spirits, excellent skills, and natural

materials. This exhibition is to catch the moments of beauty through the production of crafts, guiding viewers to observe the details of wood, bamboo, clay, copper, and tin.

Room 1: Materials/ Micro World

Viewers will observe traditional, recycled, and creative craft materials.

Room 2: Skills/ The Magic

Come see the magical skills of artists and the power of craft tools here.

Room 3: Discussion/ Imagination

This is a place for imagining the future, not just unchanging answers. Let’s take off on a plane called Imagination.

Space 4: Works from Children/Support Not a big room, though. This space has some works from children displayed. Let’s give them a big hand for being such wonderful artists.

Room 5, 6, 7: Activities 11:00-12:00 Tea Party 13:30-14:30 Music Performance 14:30-15:30 Coffee Time 15:30-16:30 Flower Arrangement exhibition 展覽 craft 工藝 material 素材 detail 細節 clay 陶土 copper 銅 tin 錫 flower arrangement 花藝

I had an amazing day at Body Making Exhibition. I went to one of the rooms and had this inspiring conversation with another artist. We both had the same thought that the yes/no pattern should be erased off art. There is barely one answer to every question, and we should not draw a line that stops us from growing or showing differences. Besides, imagination should never be held back because it’s freedom itself.

Joseph: Honey, I’ve arrived. I can’t see you. Where are you now?

Maggie: I’m here too! I can’t see you, either. I’m by the area called, The Magic of Copper. And you?

Joseph: What? The magic of what? Sorry, honey. I can’t hear you. The band just started to play and it is pretty loud. You’ll have to scream to let me know what you’re saying.
