HKUST HOLDS MOOT COURT CONTEST
Two secondary school students will compete for a $20,000 HKUST scholarship on Saturday 9 December, in the final round of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s Moot Court Contest 1995.
“The idea of the contest, which began last year, is to promote an appreciation of the legal system and to promote the use of spoken English among secondary school students whose native language is not English,” explains Dr. Howard J. Gensler, lecturer in law and taxation in HKUST’s School of Business and Management and the organizer of the contest.
The two student finalists performed well in the quarter- and semi- finals of the contest, held at the University on Saturday 2 December. In the final, the students will argue a fictitious case prepared by Dr. Gensler.
“The students must be prepared to argue both sides of the case, but only using the information contained in the contest packet,” says Dr. Gensler . “This is an oral argument contest, not a research contest. It’s a good learning experience to stand up and take questions and argue clearly and coherently.”
The first prize is a $20,000 scholarship to HKUST. A second prize of a $10,000 HKUST scholarship and two third place prizes of $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to the runners-up.
