HKUST Ranks 16th Worldwide in Latest Global Survey on Employability of
Graduates

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has risen two places to rank #16 in the high-profile annual Global Employability University Survey and Ranking this year, as reported by the New York Times. HKUST remains No. 1 in Greater China.
The survey polled 4,500 recruiters and executives from 20 countries including the United States, China, Japan, Britian, Mexico, Morocco, Spain and others from Europe, over half came from the leading 1,000 companies. The majority thinks that a global university model will arise, and that universities of tomorrow should prepare students for the realities of work with a balanced mix of theoretical and practical training as they evolved towards a fundamenmtal reshuffle. The survey has also noted that universities with a focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) spectrum of subjects do much better in this ranking.
The New York Times – which reported the result conducted by Emerging, a French human resources consultancy, and Trendence, a leading German research institute, said Asian institutions have continued to rise in the esteem of employers to make up one fifth of the top 150 which produce the most employable graduates – doubling the region’s presence on the list back in 2011. Last year, HKUST was ranked #18.
HKUST President Prof Tony F Chan said he was delighted about the ascent, “I am excited that employers around the world has found our graduates appealing, the result is a testament to our holistic education model, which is committed to nurture all-round students who tackle problems with a global perspective. As one of the most international universities in China, our diverse learning environment has provided our students the vision and abilities to handle different settings and situations.”
“There are many university rankings worldwide, but this one is particularly meaningful as it says that HKUST graduates are performing well in their jobs and they are sought after by companies globally,” Prof Chan added. In grooming desirable employees, HKUST has leveraged its strong global partnership network of 250 institutions – including some 200 exchange partners, to enhance its students’ global experiences through exchanges, internships and community services. The University seeks to boost the proportion of undergraduates with overseas exchange experience to 50 per cent from over 40 per cent at present.
HKUST’s Career Center facilitates students’ career planning by identifying their interests, keeping abreast of requirements in the ever-changing job market, and understanding employer expectations. The University also leverages its extensive network of employers, professional bodies and alumni in its programs and initiatives, enhancing graduates’ employability.
