30/04/2012 HKUST Holds The Intimacy Of Creativity

-World-Renowned Composers and Performers Meet With Emerging Composers for a First-Of-Its-Kind Concert Series and Workshop

The Intimacy of Creativity, the internationally-acclaimed, annual two-week Partnership devoted to promoting an intimate dialogue between composers and performers, returns to Hong Kong from 23 April to 6 May 2012 for its exciting second season. Presented by the School of Humanities and School Science of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), IC2012 will present music by artists of various music genres, from American folk traditions, to Canto-Pop, to traditional classical and contemporary music styles all deeply rooted in the intimate relationship between performance and composition.

Hailed by the Financial Times as "the city's most innovative music experience", The Intimacy of Creativity is a pioneering series of music concerts and workshops. Distinguished composers, together with emerging composers selected from an international call for scores, will present and revise their chamber music compositions after in-depth discussions with world-renowned performers during Open Discussions on HKUST campus from 23 to 28 April and 30 April to 4 May. The revised compositions will be formally presented at Preview Concerts at the Tsang Shiu Tim Art Hall on HKUST campus on 30 April and 5 May and at World Premiere Concerts at the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre on 1 May and 6 May.

Artistic Director and internationally-renowned composer, conductor, and pianist, Bright Sheng, will be joined by Distinguished Guest Artist and Grammy(R) Award-winning violinist and composer, Mark O'Connor, whose inspiration is deeply routed in American folk music; Distinguished Guest Composer and Grawemeyer Award-winning composer and pianist, Joan Tower; Special Guest Artist and 2009 International Van Cliburn Piano Competition Gold Medal winner, Haochen Zhang; Special Guest Artist and 2004 International Antonio Janigro Cello Competition First Prize-winner, Trey Lee (presented in collaboration with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra); Ensemble-in-Residence, the critically acclaimed Santa Barbara, CA-based Camerata Pacifica; Special Guest Composer and Canto-pop star, Jonathan Wong; Selected Emerging Composers, Michael Djupstrom (US), Matt Van Brink (US), Emma Ruth-Richards (UK), Austin Yip (HK), Matthew Tommasini (US), Pedro Faria Gomes (Portugal), and Guest Artists.
