Paying on the Go

Don't get too attached to your wallet. One day it will belong in a museum, along with everything in it.

That's because credit cards and cash are being replaced by mobile payments made on smartphones.

Mobile payments are changing the way we shop, and they're doing it quickly. There are now over 4.8 billion smartphone owners in the world. In the United States, 39% of smartphone users made at least one mobile payment in 2015. That's up from just 14% in 2014. It is estimated that by 2020, over 90% of all smartphone users will have made a mobile payment.

But what are mobile payments? Well, there are a few different types. First, they are everyday payments you can make on your smartphone. These would include opening up an Internet browser and buying a new pair of shoes. There are also "point-of-sale" payments and mobile wallet apps. These are for when you're at Starbucks or McDonald's and want to pay with your smartphone. Various other apps can help you manage your money with your smartphone. Banking apps, for example, let you easily send money to friends and families, and are very popular.

Mobile payments are a potential game-changer. For example, just imagine if every store in the world used the same point-of-sale system. You could safely use your smartphone to buy things from anywhere on the Earth. Vacation shopping would never be the same.

But let's not forget the one big disadvantage of this brave new world of mobile payments. It would make losing your phone even more of a nightmare!

The United Nations has been sharing World Happiness Report since 2012, and the report of 2016 is finally here, before World Happiness Day on March 20th. Everyone is excited to see which country among the 165 countries in the world is the happiest this year.

Some people even thought that happiness is a better measure of human welfare than the measures of education, health, and income. It also helps remind the governments of how people feel, and what people are expecting from them, and they would have a better chance to come up with friendlier policies

This year, Denmark is back at the top. Switzerland is right behind it, and then closely followed by Iceland. Denmark has won the title three times since the report started in 2012, and it lost to Switzerland only once Iceland was right after Switzerland last year.

We learn some facts from this report. People in the happiest countries are more likely to have longer lives, have more social supports, and have more freedom to make life choices, and so on. But people in the least happy countries are in a totally different story. They live shorter lives. Many of them are poor.

And they have fewer choices.

The report is also sending important messages. It tells people that being a happy country doesn't mean it has to make lots of money. If people are generous and like to share, they are more likely to feel happy. For example, in Norway it is not an unusual sight to see people painting each other's house

although they can certainly pay someone else to do that, or can surely ask for money after the job is done.

However, they don't do that. They simply share. This is also why Norway made it to fourth on the list of the world's happiest countries this year again.

(A) It is done by the local governments in Denmark, Switzerland, Iceland, and Norway (B) The more income a country makes, the happier the people in the country will be.

(C) The least happy countries are more likely to have less freedom of choice.

(D) This report is important to governments because they are sending messages to the people by it.

【8】 In this year's debate, two students will talk about the good and bad sides of smartphone use.

Student A: Everyone knows that smartphones can be useful at times, but I believe they lead to many problems. First, they are dangerous when they are used on the road. A lot of car accidents

happen because of people who use their phones and drive at the same time. Second, students might play on their phones at school and not listen to the teacher. Also, using smartphones too often gives a lot of people eye problems.

Student B: Though smartphones may lead to some problems, it is because people don't really use them correctly. In fact, they do a lot more good than bad. It's convenient for people to use

smartphones to call others at any time. This can be important if you are in danger or need to talk to someone right away. Smartphones can also be a good tool for students at school.

For example, students can use smartphones to look up a word when they don't have a dictionary or a computer at hand. They can even take notes with their smartphones.

debate 辯論 48. What was this debate about?

(A) Whether smartphone uses are good or bad.

(B) Whether people should use smartphones when driving.

(C) Whether students should have their own smartphones or not.

(D) Whether there should be traffic rules on the use of smartphones.

49. What do we know from this debate?

(A) Smartphones are made for taking notes.

(B) People can use a smartphone as a learning tool.

(8)

(C) Student B thinks smartphones are good for our health.

(D) Teachers should collect students' smartphones before classes begin.

50. Four students are talking about what they think about smartphones after the debate. Who of the following is on the same side with Student B?

(A) Dennis:

I just hate smartphones. My mother calls me all the time when I have a phone with me.

Even when I am at school, she never stops calling me. I feel so tired. I even feel afraid every time my phone rings.

(B) Candice:

Well, it is true that using smartphones hurts our eyes. However, we can rest our eyes every 30 minutes when we use a smartphone. Also, a smartphone is really helpful when you are in a foreign country.

(C) Bob:

People just spend too much time looking at smartphones. They slowly become unable to get along with real people. A lot of parents even play videos for their children with smartphones and don't really talk to their kids.

(D)Amy:

Yes, it is convenient to have a smartphone because you can get almost everything done with a phone at hand. However, smartphones sometimes make people less smart; some people can't deal with anything when they lose their smartphones.
