Sleep is a vital, often ignored, component of everyone’s health and well-being. Previous researchers used to think that people were physically and mentally inactive during sleep. But recent research has shown that your brain and body stay remarkably active while you sleep. In fact, sleep serves multiple purposes that are essential to your brain and body.

But how much sleep do you really need? According to the research on age-related sleep changes, the amount of sleep required for optimizing health varies widely across the lifespan. At birth, an infant sleeps as many as 18 hours a day. By age eight, the quantity is reduced to ten to nine hours. By the teens it falls to eight hours - after which it declines gradually to about seven to six hours in old age.

Despite the suggestions, many people are still sacrificing their sleep time to work more. However, the drop in their performance ruins any potential benefits of working additional hours. Lack of sleep can also make people have difficulty in responding to rapidly changing situations and making rational judgements. In real-life situations, it is said to contribute to some international disasters such as Three Mile Island nuclear power plant accident.

Recognizing the importance of sleep, doctors provide people with several suggestions to sleep better. If you are having trouble falling in sleep, reducing the amount of caffeine you take could be another solution. If you can't go without your morning cup of coffee, then a good rule to follow is “No coffee after noon.” This gives caffeine enough time to wear off before bed time. One more thing you can do is to eliminate TVs, laptops, and smartphones. Most people can sleep better in a dark, warm, and quiet bedroom.

Green, or sustainable, building is the creating of structures that use resource-efficient systems of construction, operation, maintenance, and even destruction. By adopting green strategies, green buildings can offer us environmental, economic, and social benefits.

Environmentally, green buildings can decrease the amount of harmful substances being sent out. Pollutants released by fossil fuels and traditional electricity contribute to climate change and create bad air quality. Green buildings use techniques such as solar power, natural lighting, and cooperation with local public transport to reduce the release of harmful substances. Green buildings can also save water by recycling rainwater and using graywater, which is the water produced by things like toilets and other appliances. “Green roofs”

that are covered with plants can additionally trap water and help create cleaner air for the atmosphere.

A common misconception about green buildings is that they are much more expensive to build and maintain than traditional buildings.

In fact, the adoption of renewable energy by green buildings can reduce huge operation costs that quickly recover any extra money spent initially. Besides, studies have shown that green buildings result in healthier and more productive employees. This has the effect of not only reducing healthcare costs, but also increasing company profits.

Socially, green buildings can not only improve employee health but also the health of the general public. Green buildings help combat air pollution with systems that move fresh air around a closed space and by using materials that send out little or no poisonous substances.

In addition, the focus on more attractive and green spaces means that people have more beautiful places to work and live in.

36. According to the passage, which of the following is true about the economic aspect of green buildings?

(A)The costs of green buildings are higher than those of traditional buildings.

(B)The use of renewable energy adds to the cost of operation in the future.

(C)Companies utilizing green buildings can decrease their healthcare costs.
