In March 2005, the Composite Consumer Price Index was 96.85, up 0.05% over the previous month. Owing to higher housing rent, rising prices in fresh vegetables and meals bought away from home, indices of Rent and housing expenses, and Foodstuff and beverages went up 0.77% and 0.71% respectively. On the other hand, lower prices in hairdressing services, outbound package tours and air tickets after the Lunar New Year, as well as continuous price reduction in winter clothing and footwear led to decreases in the indices of Other goods and services (-4.56%), Clothing and footwear (-2.18%), and Transport and communications (-0.42%).
Compared with February 2005, CPI(A) and CPI(B) increased 0.25% and 0.03% respectively.
Composite CPI in March 2005 recorded a significant year-on-year increase of 3.67%. For the 12 months ended in March 2005, the average Composite CPI rose 1.93% over the previous period.
Composite CPI for the first quarter of 2005 went up 1.14% compared with the fourth quarter of 2004.
