Carol wrote a postcard.

Read the postcard.

25 March 2010 Dear John,

This is such a beautiful place. Everywhere you look there is another mountain, waterfall, river or lake. We are having a fantastic holiday – 14 days with Dianne, Martin and their two children, Tim and David. We have had speedboat, steam train, fishing boat and cable-car rides together. It has been so much fun! ‘Warbirds over Wanaka’ was great but we did not take many photos during the show. Queenstown has so much going on and is just beautiful. We’ll send photos when we get home. We went to Milford Sound today. Wonderful! We are now staying in a hotel at Lake Te Anau.

Wish you were here!

Love,

Carol and Mike

John is reading a story about Alan.

Read the first part of the story. Answer Questions 1 – 7.

Alan loved to play computer games and sleep, but never wanted to exercise. His favourite foods were ice-cream and chocolate. Over a few years, he got fatter and fatter. Poor Alan. He was a very unhappy boy. He could not run or play sports because of his size. Also, his friends were always making fun of him by calling him nasty names.

One very hot day, Alan was taking a bus home. He had difficulty breathing and was as white as a ghost. He had to be taken to hospital.

At the hospital, Dr Lee said to Alan, “Don’t worry. You’re okay now, but you need to start losing weight. It’s bad for your health to be fat. On hot days, it may be hard for you to breathe and I’m sure you’re having trouble moving around quickly. You must take care of yourself.”

Read the second part of the story. Answer Questions 8 – 12.

Later, Dr Lee gave Alan a leaflet about how to get fit.

Fitness for free

Many kinds of exercise do not cost you anything.

You can:

cycle or walk to school instead of taking the bus

run around the park 3 to 4 times a week

walk up the stairs instead of taking the lift or escalator

Team sports

Getting fit isn't just something you have to do by yourself. It is more fun when you are with a group of friends. You can play team sports like football and basketball.

After listening to Dr Lee’s advice and reading the information about getting fit, Alan started exercising four times a week. He stopped eating food which was high in sugar and fat. He spent less time playing computer games and sleeping. Half a year passed and Alan’s weight returned to normal. He could move around comfortably. He joined his school football team and even became the football star of his school.

Alan’s friends stopped calling him nasty names and Alan is now a happy boy. He understands that keeping healthy is very important.
