Over the last three years, the rising cost of food has become a serious problem in many countries. Since 2005, the prices of crops such as rice, corn, and potatoes have risen by as much as 75%. These changes have led to protests in countries like India, and it could take several years before prices come down. For the world’s poor, this trend is disastrous. Indeed, millions of people who were previously capable of feeding their families can no longer afford food at local stores.

Three factors are responsible for this increase: the rising cost of oil, climate change, and biofuel production. Rising oil costs raise the price of everything form fertilizer to shipping. Food harvests have been affected by strange conditions, such as prolonged droughts and large-scale flooding. In addition, crops used to produce biofuels such ethanol have taken up farmland that could otherwise be used to produce food.

Some governmental organizations have been severely affected as well. For example, 背面尚有試題

As a young man, Warren Fellows dreamed of being rich, but he had no intention of working hard to make his fortune honestly. Instead, he decided to smuggle drugs into Australia, first from India and then from Thailand. For a while, he was successful in avoiding detection by the police and customs authorities, but he became over confident and careless. In 1978, he was arrested in a Bangkok hotel, as he prepared to leave for Australia. He had twenty-four bags of high-grade heroin in his suitcase. So began life of hell that would last for the next twelve years. Fellows was lucky that he was given a prison sentence and not the death penalty.

In his autobiography The Damage Done he describes the cruelty, the

desperation and the harsh conditions of prison life in Thailand. He served his sentence at the notorious Bang Kwang Men's prison that was ironically referred to as the Bangkok Hilton by the inmates. Fellows was granted an amnesty by the King of Thailand,
