(I) The human body has an amazing ability to heal itself. Studies focusing on the link between emotions and the body’s immune system indicate that positive emotions or attitudes like love, joy and laughter can support the body’s immune responses. Doctors have found clear proof to back up the claim that in many ways

laughter is the best medicine. One study shows that laughing makes people feel more relaxed than looking at beautiful pictures of nature. After a good laugh, a person’s heart beats faster than usual, and this can last for up to five minutes. Several studies have also found that laughter helps produce IgA, which is what the body uses to fight colds and the flu.

Although no studies have been able to show a clear link between laughter and pain, many patients agree that they feel less pain after a good laugh. It may result from chemicals produced in the blood, and that their muscles are more relaxed, or because they are simply distracted from thinking about their pain. No wonder the famous comedian Groucho Marx once said, “A clown is like aspirin, only he works twice as fast.”

(II) “Jacob the Liar” is a story about Jacob Heym, a Jewish (猶太人的) man, during World War II. Jacob had told people many lies. However, these were not to trick people, but rather to give them hope and courage in the time of war.

Jacob lied to people about the radio: he spread positive news about the war, and told people that the news was heard on his radio. This gave the Jews a reason to hope for a better future.

As a result, Jacob had to keep lying by creating new and interesting stories, such as armies from Russia coming to save the Jews by defeating (戰勝) the Germans. These false stories helped people to stay hopeful.

Soon, Jacob came to be known as the man with a radio, and people depended on him for news and information. This was stressful for Jacob because he felt guilty about giving people false hopes. Thus, to stop lying about the radio, Jacob pretended that the radio was broken and couldn’t work anymore. However, people still asked him for more news about the war.

Finally, Jacob was unable to deal with the pressure from his guilt, so he admitted lying about the radio to one of his close friends. His friend said that Jacob had done right and that he would have done the same thing under the same situation.

Jacob’s lies had helped the Jewish people pass through such a difficult time. When a lie brings people much more help than harm, then why not tell a lie?

People use it not only to “beat the heat” but also to wash away their faults or wrong acts they did during the past year. During this time, water has the symbol with the hope of a good, fresh start.

The first day of Songkran includes different activities to send off the “old year.” Rituals are performed and offerings are made to Buddhist monks(和尚).
