When movies first began to be made, sound technology had yet to be invented, and films made at this time were known as “silent films.” Actors in silent films had to create a character and show feelings using only body language. Charles Chaplin was one of the most creative actors in the time of silent films.

Charles Chaplin was born in a poor family in England. He went onstage for the first time at the age of five and made his first appearance in a Hollywood movie when he was twenty-four. He not only acted but also directed and wrote stories for his own movies. He created one character that is known to people all over the world—the Little Tramp (流浪漢). The Tramp was a lower-class character with his very recognizable black mustache (小鬍子). He carried a wooden stick and wore large pants, huge shoes, and a round black hat. In the course of each Tramp movie, the Tramp was always faced with several challenges. However, the Tramp managed to solve all the problems he faced in the end with his courage and a kind heart. In the more than 80 films that Charles Chaplin acted in during his career, he mostly appeared as the Tramp.

In 1927, “talkies” (有聲電影) appeared for the first time and soon became popular. During the 1930s, nearly 5,000 talkies were produced. Chaplin refused to make a talkie all through the 1930s. During this time, he only produced two films, City Lights in 1931 and Modern Times in 1936. Although these two movies were very different from his earlier movies, they were still very successful because the audience had learned what to expect from his films through tone and rhythm.

On December 25, 1977, Charles Chaplin died in Switzerland. The Little Tramp, a complex character who could be either funny or sad, or gentle or strong, is still remembered by movie lovers today all over the world.

26. The Tramp in Chaplin’s movies is NOT _______.

(A) brave (B) kind (C) ill-fitted (D) high-class

27. Charles Chaplin made his first appearance in a Hollywood movie when he was ______.

(C) About 5,000 talkies were made during the 1930s.

(D) People liked talkies soon after they were produced.

Can you think of ten interesting things to do with a crushed Coke can? Perhaps you could turn it into a wall hanging. If you enjoy something unique like that, then you might want to become a “junk artist.”

Junk art is a type of art that began in the 1960s. It is very special, since it involves creating art from garbage and waste. The junk art movement has become extremely popular due to its great creativity. Junk artists have used pipes to decorate mirrors and turned car parts into sculptures (雕像). In addition, there are millions of ideas waiting to be discovered.

Perhaps the best thing about junk art is that anyone can create it. For those who are unable to afford expensive art materials, junk art helps them satisfy their urge to create. Jimmy Dunmore, a 55-year-old high school custodian (守衛) from South Carolina, U.S.A., was a quiet man who no one ever noticed. That changed on the day he came to the school with a model of a ship he had made from rope, wood, and other waste. He had also made other pieces like a truck from matchsticks (火柴棒), lamps from old glass bottles, a bed for baby from thrown-away wood, and other pieces of art made only from “garbage.”

Today, both art departments in colleges and art experts around the world have recognized junk art as a new art form, and several junk art exhibitions have honored great junk artists. Many people believe that finding beauty in a pile of garbage and turning trash into treasure can be as much a form of art as oil painting. Most of all, junk art shows us the exact opposite side while we usually see an object having lost its worth over time, and this makes junk art an art form that will always push the limits of creativity.

29. Which of the following statements about junk art is true?

(A) The materials for it are usually expensive.

(B) It is a type of art that began in the 1960s.

(C) It is hard for people to find the materials for it.

(D) Few people can become junk artists.

30. Jimmy Dunmore ______.

(A) came to the school with a real ship.

(B) made a bed for baby from good wood.

(C) has created many pieces of art from garbage.

(D) works in South Carolina as a high school teacher.

31. Which of the following statements about junk art is NOT true?

(A) It shows great creativity.

(B) Anyone can create junk art.

(D) Only people who have special talent can create it.
