ABSTRACT

The thesis aims to study the relation between translation norms and strategies by exploring the two translated versions of the Bible quotations in Defoe’s English novel: Robinson Crusoe (published in 1719). The two translated versions are Wang’s from Taiwan (published in 2002) and Guo’s from China (published in 1998). The theory of translation shifts by Catford (1965) and theory of translation norms by Chesterman (1997) were employed in the study. Catford’s translation shifts consisted of level shifts and category shifts which include class shifts, unit shifts and structure shifts. In Catford, translation shifts were used to achieve textual equivalence between ST and TT. Chesterman’s translation norms involved expectancy norms and professional norms which contained three subcategories: accountability norms, communication norms and relation norms. Translation norms referred to regularities of translation behavior within a specific society and held the power on influence of translators’ actions and translations.

In this study, first, translation strategies used in the two Chinese translated versions of the Bible quotations were analyzed. Second, translation strategies used in two translated versions of Bible quotations in the novel were compared. Third, through the result of analysis on translation shifts, the researcher explored whether two translators conformed to their TLs’ translation norms respectively. The result shows that the occurrence of translation shifts make two translators conform to their TLs’ translation norms respectively. However, the degree of conforming is not similar. As a whole, although both Wang’s and Guo’s translated products are smoothly close to their TTs’ language usage, Guo conforms to translation norms in a greater degree than Wang does.
