We hierarchically classify cities in Taiwan into five categories and study the patterns and characteristics of migration between types of cities in 1979 and 1989. The major findings include: l)The out-migration rate has decreased from 1979 to 1989 for all types of cities; 2)The out-migration rate is higher in rural areas than in urban areas; 3)The deferring effect of distance on migration has decreased in all types of cities except rural area;
4)Non-metropolitan inhabitants with higher education or lowe:t: income tend to have long distance migration;
S)People living in the satellites of metropolitan cities emphasize more on the level of income and public expenditures in their choice of out-migration location; 6)The factor that rural inhabitants consider in their migration decision was economic in 1979. It changed to the conditions of service industry and public facilities in 1989.
