EXTERNAL MERCHANDISE TRADE STATISTICS

DECEMBER/2011 No. 12

The total merchandise export for December 2011 amounted to MOP734 million, up by 35.9% year-on- year, of which value of re-exports (MOP509 million) and domestic exports (MOP225 million) increased by 50.7% and 11.1% respectively. Total merchandise import amounted to MOP6.44 billion, up by 41.6% year-on- year. Merchandise trade deficit amounted to MOP5.70 billion in December 2011.

In the fourth quarter of 2011, total value of merchandise export (MOP1.92 billion) grew by 14.6% year- on-year, and that of merchandise import (MOP17.88 billion) rose by 44.7%, resulting in a trade deficit of MOP15.97 billion.

For the whole year of 2011, total value of merchandise export increased slightly by 0.2% year-on-year to MOP6.97 billion. Total value of merchandise import expanded by 41.2% to MOP62.29 billion over 2010.

Merchandise trade deficit widened by 48.9% year-on-year to MOP55.32 billion in 2011; the exports/imports ratio that reflects the situation of import and export balance stood at 11.2%, down by 4.6 percentage points year-on-year. For the whole year of 2011, total value of external merchandise trade amounted to MOP69.26 billion, up by 35.6% compared with MOP51.08 billion in 2010.

In December 2011, exports of Textile & garment declined by 21.0% year-on-year, of which value of Knitted or crocheted garment and Textile fabrics decreased by 35.1% and 28.9% respectively. Exports of Non-textile grew by 54.4% year-on-year, of which value of Articles for casino soared by 399.6%.

In 2011, exports of Textile & garment fell by 17.7% to MOP1.34 billion; meanwhile, exports of Non- textile grew by 5.6% year-on-year to MOP5.63 billion, with that of Tobacco & wine and Machines & apparatus, parts & accessories thereof rising by 42.4% and 39.8% respectively, but exports of Diamond & diamond jewellery dropping by 63.3%.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP3.11 billion) in 2011 increased by 3.5%, but that to Mainland China (MOP1.10 billion), the USA (MOP556 million) and the EU (MOP383 million) decreased by 0.4%, 28.9% and 6.4% respectively year-on-year.

In December 2011, total merchandise import amounted to MOP6.44 billion, up by 41.6% year-on-year, with that of Capital goods rising by 47.9%.

In 2011, total value of merchandise import grew by 41.2% year-on-year to MOP62.29 billion, with that of Consumer goods (MOP38.48 billion) and Capital goods (MOP10.92 billion) rising by 46.6% and 57.1%

respectively year-on-year.

Analysed by imports of Consumer goods, in 2011, value of Food & beverages (MOP8.58 billion) expanded by 33.7% year-on-year; Other durable consumer goods (MOP13.31 billion) grew by 56.5%, with Gold jewellery (MOP6.66 billion) rising by 99.7%; Other semi-durable consumer goods (MOP8.49 billion) increased by 74.4%, with Handbags & wallets (MOP3.50 billion) surging by 114.8%.

Within the imports of Capital goods, value of information technology products registered continuous growth in 2011, with that of Mobile phones (MOP4.30 billion) and Portable computers (MOP1.08 billion) soaring by 74.5% and 171.8% respectively year-on-year.

In 2011, merchandise import from Mainland China (MOP19.12 billion), the EU (MOP15.51 billion) and Hong Kong (MOP7.59 billion) rose by 39.4%, 55.7% and 64.0% respectively year-on-year.
