Territory-wide System Assessment 2018 (Primary 3) Assessment Design

English Language (Listening Assessment)

Design Rationale

The listening assessment tasks for the Territory-wide System Assessment 2018 (Primary 3) were designed with reference to the prevailing curriculum documents and in alignment with the requirements of the basic competencies of Key Stage 1 students.

Based on the recommendations of the Working Group on Papers and Question Design of the Coordinating Committee on Basic Competency Assessment and Assessment Literacy, the principles for modifications include relating assessment items to students’ life experiences and tying in with their cognitive development, serving to lessen students’ burden of learning, aligning with the spirit of the curriculum and reflecting the standards of basic competencies.

Details of the Assessment Papers

There are three Listening sub-papers for the Territory-wide System Assessment 2018 (Primary 3). For each sub-paper, there is a total of 19 items in three listening tasks.

The total assessment time is about 20 minutes. All listening materials are played twice.

There are different text types in the assessment papers (e.g. conversations and stories). P3 students are familiar with these text types. The topics of the listening tasks are related to students’ daily life experiences (e.g. school life, extra-curricular activities). The choice of vocabulary and phrases in the assessment materials are of a level appropriate to that of P3 students.

Students are assessed on their ability to discriminate between common words with a small range of vowel and consonant sounds. They are also assessed on the use of a small range of strategies to understand the meaning of short and simple texts on familiar topics which are delivered slowly and clearly in familiar accents.
