25/11/2011 HKUST Launches its 20th Anniversary Celebration Party with 3D Commemorative Album Over 3,000 members of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

(HKUST) family comprising Court and Council Members, faculty, staff, students and alumni converged on campus today for the University's 20th Anniversary Celebration Party, featuring a dazzling array of culturally diverse performances presented by faculty and students.

To kick off the celebration, HKUST Council Chairman Dr the Hon Marvin K T Cheung and President Prof Tony F Chan dotted the eyes of the dragon for a traditional dragon dance. They were joined by Court Chairman Dr John C C Chan, President Emeritus Prof Chia-Wei Woo as well as serving Vice-Presidents, Deans, representatives of faculty, staff, students and alumni in cake-cutting and toasting ceremonies.

Addressing the Party, Prof Tony F Chan told the cheering crowd that good tidings never ceased rolling in as the year-long celebrations unfolded. Halfway through the year, HKUST was ranked Asia's top university by Quacquarelli Symonds Asian University Rankings. Its success story took up a whole chapter in "The Road to Academic Excellence", a research report on higher education released by the World Bank. In October, the New York Times ran an article calling HKUST a model of success in higher education. In the minds of many, HKUST represents a miracle in higher education and the genius of Hong Kong. Global peers are eager to get to know HKUST, and regional partners are keen to emulate her success.

Reflecting the University's multicultural character, faculty and students from around the world put on a variety of performances, from Chinese martial arts and Lion Dance, Korean Drumming, Indian Dance, Beatboxing, Hip Hop dance to choral performance.

To mark the milestone, HKUST has produced a commemorative album showcasing its past accomplishments and future goals. Emblematic of the University's innovative approach, each copy comes with a specially-prepared software. By downloading the software and holding the cover in front of a webcam-equipped computer screen, a 3D short film will be set in motion bringing the President to life on screen for an innovative introduction of the album content, a fitting keepsake for a university of science and technology.
