14/04/2011 700 HKUST Staff and Students to Render Volunteer Service in 40 Projects This Weekend Over 700 students and staff members of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will, over the next 4 days, render volunteer service in 40 projects, serving visually and hearing impaired people, underprivileged and sick children, senior citizens who are homeless or living alone, ethnic minority children, and even abandoned animals. The projects also include anti-drug activities, hospital visits, and environmental programs.
At today's kick-off ceremony, Hong Kong Spirit Ambassador 2010 Mr Wayne Chau shared his experience of metamorphosis - from a child in a poor village in Guangxi to an entrepreneur. Mr Chau is committed to community service and has founded a charitable organization called The Outstanding Givers. Mr Chau is also an HKUST alumnus graduating from the Computer Science Department.
The ceremony also embraced the presentation of the SMB Dean's Service Awards, the Footprint Service Learning Photo Contest awards, and the Roy To Community Service Award.
The SMB Dean's Service Awards is a new initiative in the HKUST Business School. It aims to encourage Business School students to whole-heartedly engage in community services within and beyond the campus. The 10 awardees this year have show a proven record in serving the community in a wide context, and have demonstrated a solid record of leadership and organizational abilities. They were Chan Lok-Yee, Patrick Manuel Felgner, Khor Sher-Lyn, Kwan Ching, Matthew Lee Yat-Wah, Byron Li Wang-Hon, Lo Ho-Yi, Tan Sze-Jye, Solomon Wong Bing-Kin, and Wong Kwan-Lok.
The winners of the Footprint Service Learning Photo Contest were Lee Tsz Ying, Fong Yee Yan, Tse Wai Yin, Huang Zihang, and Fan Chao.
The Roy To Community Service Award is an annual award aiming to recognize the HKUST student who has provided the most outstanding community service. It was set up in memory of Mr Roy To, an HKUST alumnus who lost his life on a service trip in Inner Mongolia. The 2010 and 2011 recipients of this Award were Miss Ng Mai Mai and Mr Gabriel Yu Chung-Sing respectively. Miss Ng has been taking part in social service activities since she was in Secondary One, and her most recent volunteer project was building homes for needy families in Mongolia. Meanwhile, Gabriel Yu initiated The Lasting Smile project, which aims to capture the lasting smiles of senior citizens in elderly hostels.
