HKUST Inaugurates Advanced Materials Research Institute

Hong Kong industry's competitive edge in the field of advanced materials will receive a boost with the inauguration of the Advanced Materials Research Institute (AMRI) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on 5 September.

Established to encourage and conduct multidisciplinary and collaborative research in the key area of advanced materials, the Institute aims to work in partnership with local industry in the discovery and development of materials.

Professor Nelson Cue, Head of Physics at HKUST and Director of AMRI, will conduct proceedings at the inauguration ceremony. The ceremony will be attended by Ms Annie Choi, Assistant Director-General of Industry (Technology Development), Dr York Liao, Executive Director of Varitronix Ltd, Prof Chia-Wei Woo, President, Prof Joe Mize, Acting Vice-President for R&D and Prof Leroy Chang, Dean of Science. The ceremony will be followed by a laboratory tour.

The Institute's first major collaborative project, already underway with local manufacturer SAE Magnetics (H.K. Ltd), focuses on advanced materials for magnetic recording heads.
