HKUST’s SuperNet Services Well Received by the Public
After launching its low-cost access service to the Internet world-wide computer network, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s Hong Kong SuperNet has received excellent response from the public.
“The response from the public has exceeded our expectations,” says Mr Bob Coggeshall, Project Manager of Hong Kong SuperNet. “In the first 12 days we attracted over 50 subscribers.”
A fast growing number of individuals and businesses in Hong Kong can now log into the Internet, and benefit from the cheap, high speed communications that Hong Kong SuperNet offers. “For just $175 per month we are offering dial-up access to the Internet for individual subscribers with a personal computer and a modem. We also offer dedicated access for institutions and large businesses for $3,500 per month,” Mr Coggeshall added.
Hong Kong SuperNet is the result of a research project funded initially by the Sino Software Research Centre of HKUST. It is now being made available to the Hong Kong community through the HKUST RandD Corporation Ltd., an independent business unit of the University whose mission is to facilitate the commercialisation of the University’s research results.

Internet is a global computer network which can reach tens of thousands of information services offered by more than twelve thousand organizations in over 45 countries.
Internet users are able to communicate by electronic mail with any of the estimated 20 million network users. They can ‘chat’ by keyboard in real-time global conversations, read newspaper wire reports as they are sent, get and give advice on any number of special interest topics (there are thousands) and share computer software.
