11/04/2011 HKUST Awards Student Activities That Further the "1-HKUST" Concept and Enrich Campus Life The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today presents awards for five top student-initiated activities that enrich and give meaning to campus life.

Called "President's 1-HKUST Student Life Award", it is bestowed on five winning student activities that best enrich the student experience. Each activity will receive an average of about $10,000 in funding support.

Officiating at the presentation ceremony, HKUST President Tony Chan said that he had collected numerous novel suggestions from his monthly tea gatherings with students, and the Award aims to encourage students to exercise their creativity in designing and implementing activities that satisfy the four criteria of serving social needs, originality, feasibility, and having an impact on the student community.

The students responded enthusiastically to the launch of this Award. Five projects were selected from 23 entries by a judging panel to receive the Award. They were:

1. March in March (26 March 2011) - A hiking event to encourage the HKUST community to connect with each other, to enjoy nature, and to enhance physical fitness.

2. UST Great Minds (31 March 2011) - Ten professors from different schools were each invited to talk for 10 minutes on one topic that they are passionate about.

3. HKUST Talent Contest 2011 (7 to 26 April 2011) - This project aims to promote multi-cultural sharing.

4. Organic Fun Day @ HKUST (17 April 2011) - A family event for students, staff, alumni and their family members to enjoy games, food and hands-on activities centered around the "organic" theme. 5. UST Without Boundary (1 September to 2 December 2011) - This

project aims to connect local, Mainland and international students through a photo competition, games, movies and food gatherings.
