Believing to Create...

I have often been asked the question, "Why did you choose to go to a brand new university without a track record?"

It all started 10 years ago, back in the summer of 1991, after my A-level examinations. After attending talks and introductory sessions arranged by different universities, a decision was called for. And the following words really inspired me.

"What is the likelihood that during your entire lifetime, you would have the opportunity to be a pioneer at a new university?"

"The framework is there, it is now up to you to create something out of it!"

That was why I enrolled at HKUST as one of the first intake of undergraduates in 1991, together with 594 young risk-takers who shared the same vision. At HKUST, I got plenty of opportunities to create something from scratch. The biggest challenge was forming the Students' Union. Together with several new-found friends, I put up a notice on campus inviting fellow students to a meeting on setting up our own Students' Union. The rest is history.

Ten years later, and I can see so many breakthroughs and creations at HKUST as well as what the graduates themselves have accomplished. The University and her people have really achieved a lot for herself and for Hong Kong. This is because 10 years ago these people believed that this day would come. And now they see it with their own eyes.

I remember one day I came across the approved budget of the Students' Union posted on the notice board. It had a turnover more than 10 times the budget we had the day I handed over the Union seal. These were the tangible results we alumni had created together. "It is only when you choose to give first, that you can get in return." I truly appreciate the power of education — to see the new generation achieving even more than their predecessors.

So, now 10 years have passed. Has the opportunity for creation passed? Of course not.

Creation comes from believing — believing in something that has not yet existed or happened, something that has not yet been created or dreamt of. The University has now taken her first steps. To echo the theme of the 10th anniversary, it is time for her to lift off and soar.

How high can she fly? The sky is the limit !

Sean Lin

Over 240 alumni and students gathered at the 10th Anniversar y Alumni-Students Confluence in the University’s Chinese Restaurant on 24 April to share memories and experiences as HKUST entered its 10th anniversary year.

Jointly organized by the Student Affairs Office and the HKUST Alumni Association, this Confluence was specially held as one of the celebrations for the 10th anniversar y. President Chia-Wei Wo o hosted the function. It was also the Confluence with the highest number of alumni participants since the event was inaugurated in 1998.

The evening commenced with introductory remarks from the Director of Student Affairs, Mr Luke Wong, followed by a warm welcome from President Woo and an address by the President of HKUST Alumni Association, Mr Terry Leung.

At ever y table, questions and answers bounced enthusiastically back and forth as students were keen to learn from their "big brothers and sisters", and the alumni just as eager to share what they had learnt since they left their alma mater. They also participated in an interesting "people-matching" game designed by the Alumni Association.

The evening’s mood was best captured by the President of HKUST Alumni Association, Mr Terry Leung. "What a great turnout! Both alumni and students are eager to celebrate HKUST's achievements at this histor ic m i l e s ton e . I l o ok for w a rd to t h e s a m e l e ve l of participation at the coming anniversar y and alumni events," he said.
