In 2010, a total of 91 hotels and similar establishments were in operation, consisting of 60 hotels and 31 guest-houses. In line with the continuous increase in hotel guests, Sales & Other Receipts surged by 31.2% over 2009; while Operating Expenses, Compensation of Employees and Purchase of Goods &

Commission Paid increased by 23.2%, 10.6% and 30.3% respectively. In addition, Gross Value Added and Gross Fixed Capital Formation of the sector soared by 36.4% and 88.3% year-on-year.

Total number of guest rooms rose by 2.4% from 19,697 in 2009 to 20,174 in 2010. In addition, seating capacity of the hotel-operated food and beverage facilities increased by 8.5% year-on-year to 27,580.

Persons Engaged and Compensation of Employees

The hotel sector had 26,721 persons engaged at the end of 2010, up by 1.5% from a year earlier.

Analyzed by type of establishment, 26,564 were working in hotels, with 20,151 (75.4% of total) engaging in the 23 five-star hotels, up by 2.0% year-on-year. Meanwhile, the 31 guest-houses had 157 workers, an increase of 1.9%.

Compensation of Employees increased by 10.6% over 2009 to MOP 4.13 billion, with that of the five-star hotels amounting to MOP 3.34 billion (80.9% of total).

Total Receipts and Total Expenditure

Total Receipts of the hotel sector went up by 29.2% year-on-year to MOP 14.24 billion in 2010, of which Receipts from on-line business took up MOP 242 million (1.7% of total). Analyzed by item, Receipts from Room Sales (MOP 6.53 billion), Food & Beverages (MOP 3.11 billion ) and Rental of Venues (MOP 2.22 billion) accounted for 45.9%, 21.8% and 15.6% of the total.

Total Expenditure of the sector increased by 12.9% over 2009 to MOP 15.65 billion, of which Operating Expenses (MOP 5.48 billion), Compensation of Employees (MOP 4.13 billion) and Purchase of Goods & Commission Paid (MOP 1.79 billion) increased by 23.2%, 10.6% and 30.3% respectively.

Among the non-operating expenses, Depreciation of Fixed Assets (MOP 3.02 billion) increased by 10.4% year-on-year, while Interest Paid (MOP 1.23 billion) decreased by 21.9%.

Gross Value Added and Gross Fixed Capital Formation

Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy surged by 36.4%

year-on-year to MOP 7.08 billion. With the conclusion of a new hotel and increase in hotels’ facilities, Gross Fixed Capital Formation soared by 88.3% year-on-year to MOP 4.88 billion.

Explanatory Notes

Survey Coverage

Coverage of the Survey includes all licensed hotels (60) and guest-houses (31) operating in 2010.

The list of establishments comes from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) and supplemented with information from the Financal Services Bureau and the Macao Government Tourist Office.

Data Collection Method

The questionnaires are mailed to the hotels and guest-houses, and the completed questionnaires can be returned to DSEC in person, by post or submitting to a visiting enumerator. Alternatively, respondents may download the electronic questionnaire from the DSEC website and upload the completed form for submission.

Glossary

Establishment

An economic unit which engages, under a single legal entity, in one or predominantly one kind of economic activity at a single location.

Persons Engaged

All individuals who work for the establishment, including paid and unpaid workers. Also included are individuals who are temporary absent for a short period, on sick leave, on holiday or other reasons;

excluding those who are absent for an undetermined period.

Compensation of Employees

The sum of wages and salaries, payments in kind, and other benefits paid to employees.

Operating Expenses

The total amount of expenses on goods and services supplied to the establishment by a third party. It includes materials acquired; water; fuels; electricity; maintenance and repairs; rent; rent of machinery and equipment; rent of vehicles; premiums on non-labour insurance; bank charges; computer and information expenses; marketing and publicity; storage; communications; business travels; royalties and trademarks;

cargo transport; uniform; other contract services; and other operating expenses.

Sales & Other Receipts

Receipts from the provision of services; resale of goods and products before any deduction of costs.

Receipts are from the sales of rooms; food & beverage; rent received; and other receipts not specified above, but exclude interest received and insurance claims.

Gross Value Added

Equals the sales and other receipts; plus changes in inventories; minus purchases of goods for sale;

commission paid and operating expenses.

Gross Fixed Capital Formation

Equals the value of total acquisitions of new; used and self-produced fixed assets; less the proceeds from sales of fixed assets. Fixed assets include buildings; furniture; machinery and equipment; vehicles; and other durable goods with a usable span of one year or more. Also included are major repairs; alterations and extensions made to the existing assets. Acquisitions of fixed assets are valued at gross price including transportation and installation fees. Proceeds from sales of fixed assets should exclude the sale of scrap.
