EXTERNAL MERCHANDISE TRADE STATISTICS

MAY/2009 No. 5

The value of total exports of goods amounted to MOP570 million in May 2009, down by 65.7% year- on-year, with the value of domestic exports falling sharply by 75.2% to MOP242 million and that of re-exports dropping by 52.1% to MOP328 million. The value of total imports of goods amounted to MOP2.84 billion, down by 22.1% year-on-year. A trade deficit of MOP2.27 billion was recorded for May 2009.

From January to May 2009, total exports of goods fell by 53.3% year-on-year to MOP3.28 billion, with the value of domestic exports and re-exports declining by 67.5% and 29.9% respectively. Meanwhile, total imports of goods slid by 21.6% to MOP13.99 billion over the same period of 2008.

In the first five months of 2009, the trade deficit narrowed by 1.0% year-on-year to MOP10.71 billion;

the exports/imports ratio went down by 15.9 percentage points to 23.4%.

The value of Textile & garment exports reduced by 69.3% year-on-year to account for 38.9% of the total exports in the first five months of 2009; meanwhile, the value of Non-textile exports decreased by 30.1%, with exports of Machines & apparatus, parts & accessories thereof dropping by 46.2%, and exports of Jewellery and Tobacco & wine falling by 15.9% and 12.9% respectively.

Analysed by major destination of Macao’s merchandise exports, in the first five months of 2009, the value of exports to Hong Kong, the USA and Mainland China together absorbed 71.6% of the total exports.

The value of exports to Hong Kong declined by 8.3% year-on-year, and the value of exports to the USA and Mainland China dropped notably by 76.2% and 42.7% respectively. In addition, the value of exports to the EU fell by 58.4%.

In the first five months of 2009, the value of total imports of goods dropped by 21.6% year-on-year;

the value of imports of all broad economic categories registered year-on-year decreases, of which Raw materials & semi-manufactures declined by 45.2%, Fuels & lubricants fell by 26.0% and Consumer goods recorded a slower decrease of 7.2%.

In the total imports of Consumer goods, the value of imports of Passenger motor cars &

motorcycles fell by 45.3% year-on-year and that of Other semi-durable consumer goods (e.g. clothing and footwear) dropped by 26.3%, but the value of imports of Household consumption and Other non-durable consumer goods (e.g. tobacco and skin-care products) rose by 10.0% and 3.9% respectively.

Within the imports of Raw materials & semi-manufactures, the value of textile materials (19.3% of total) fell by 59.3% year-on-year and that of construction materials (13.8% of total) decreased by 73.9%.

In the first five months of 2009, the value of imports from Mainland China and Hong Kong dropped by 43.0% and 16.3% respectively year-on-year, but that from the USA and the EU rose by 24.2% and 5.6%

respectively.
