開課對象:依規定得免修外國語文(英文)課程之大一新生,須以進階英語

     程替代。

課程目標:透過多元化及跨領域之課程設計,提升學生進階英語聽、說、讀、

     寫能力,以符合全球化英語教學之趨勢。

課程內容:

This course offers an overview of the development of contemporary culture, society and higher education in the 21

Century. It aims to help students understand the origins of contemporary practices and problems in the international community. Hence, this course is designed to help students acquire the ability to use academic English fluently and accurately in speaking, listening, reading and writing through various issues discussions .

Major reading themes include:

(2) American culture and social problems (3) Britain’s changing society

(3) Global College rankings (4) Technology in higher education

(5) Commercialization and higher education

授課方式:

Teaching strategies:

Based on the selected materials, each class (2 hours) will include one unit from two books. Generally, reading section will go first, then conversation and writing later. Students are required to preview weekly article and explain new vocabularies and phrases.

In the second hour, related questions to the reading will be discussed. After 4 topics complete, students are required to make an individual or group presentation.

課程要求:

You are expected to do four things:

1. Attend class, complete reading assignments, and participate in class discussions. This course has both discussion and lecture components.

I will give a lecture for the reading assignment first. The outline of

the presentation will be prepared by teacher. Then each class will

start with a discussion that focuses on the assigned readings and uses

them to address larger questions. You are expected participate actively in these discussions. Question-posing to the class is especially encouraged, especially questions that may have no "right"

answer. At the last period, students are required to present the discussion group by group. If the topic is complete, teacher will give an introduction on the topic at the last 15 minutes for the following week.

2. Group presentation: each student is required to present their discussion in turn each time. The presentation will be graded on the following element: fluency, content, and being well-organized. Those who can’t reach the standard may be expected to try it once more next time.

3. Complete worksheet: You are supposed to complete worksheets in the different units after discussing with group members.

4. Final Exam: it will be held in format of essay questions

成績評量:

Grading and Attendance Policies:

1. Your Grades will be based on class discussions, presentations, quizzes, and final examination.

a. Class discussion , Quizzes, and Assignment: 25%

b. Class Presentation: 40%

c. Final Exam:25 %

d. English Corner and Toastmaster: 10% (2 attendances in English corner and 2 in Toastmaster)

2. You are expected to be mature and professional than before. 100

% attendance is expected. Up to 4-hour excused absence is acceptable because of irresistible reasons. 6- hour excused and unexcused absence will result in a failure of the course.
