Please summarize the entire research, teaching, or science and technology R&D and management work process (To be completed by the employee)
While at NCKU, I have accomplished the following tasks as part of the construction of the compact Liquid Crystal-based Fourier Transform Spectrometer (LCFTS), and to benefit the Microtechnology Lab.
System Optics
• Verification of optical components was performed, including:
• Testing of Glan-Thompson Polarizers (and rotational alignment hardware)
• Reevaluation of simulated optics (ray tracing and divergence calculations)
• Verification of simulated optics using a 3D-printed test bed of optics holders and a rail.
• Identified issues with the simulated results, and ordered new optical components for improved collimation and versatility.
Next Task:
Testing and installation of optics into LCFTS.
System Electronics
• Verified function of custom amplifier.
• Researched connections for National Instruments Digital Acquisition (DAQ) card to incorporate amplifier into the LCFTS software
Next Task:
Complete wiring and secure internal circuitry.
Software
• Reviewed Labview Code for the LCFTS
• Added in additional +5 V and Ground for Amplifier Next Task:
Verify output of code before hooking up system.

Hardware
• Checked dimensions and tolerances of the chassis, determining that the machined components had incorrect dimenstions.
• Hand-filed front optical coupler sliding mount to fit more smoothly.
Next Task:
Install optics and electronics into the system.
Documentation
• Completed Liquid Crystal cell construction documentation
• Edited multiple proposals for the lab
• Edited and presented paper: “Pattern Recognition in a Platform-Based Shear Force Sensor” for the 2015 International Symposium on Optomechatronic Technology” for Dr. Wei-Chih Wang and Dr. Tien-Hao Chang of NCKU.

Yes, but some additional work still need to be completed.

What are the methods, professional knowledge, and progress of the research, teaching, or R&D and management work?
The LC FTS system has finally started to come together, with refinements of the optics, incorporation of electronics and software into a system that should be functional within the next few months.
(3)受延攬人之研究或教學或科技研發與管理成果對該計畫(或貴單位)助益如何？
How have the research, teaching, or R&D and management results of the employed person given benefit to the project (or your unit)?
Benjamin’s work is intended to result in his PhD, which will be of value to him, and will likely result in grant opportunities and partnerships with companies for my lab.

How has the employed person, during his or her term of employment, benefited your unit or the relevant domestic academic field?
In addition to working towards his degree, Benjamin served as a presenter and a personal secretary while at the 2015 International Symposium on Optomechatronic Technology, and helping to present NCKU as an excellent choice for the 2017 conference.

Please describe the specific work performance, or the results of research, teaching, or R&D and management work:
He has finally provided documentation of the Liquid Crystal cell construction process, reexamined his optical components and determined that he requires different lenses, incorporated the amplifier and different sensor configurations into the LCFTS control software, and assembled most of the LCFTS. This is a huge step forward for the project, which has been idle for almost two years.

Despite his tardiness in arriving most days, Ben is a well-rounded engineer who will complete tasks to the best of his ability, and knows his limitations. His contributions are invaluable, and he’s always willing to be wrong and learn from others.
