COURSE DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this course is to refine the writing skills of second-year students in the English MA program. If a student is ready to begin working on the MA thesis, the student will have an opportunity in this course first to prepare the working

bibliography for the thesis and the thesis proposal. Next, the student will do a detailed outline for one chapter of the thesis and then begin to write that chapter.

Once that chapter is completed, there should also be time to begin a second chapter.

For a student who is not yet ready to begin work on the MA thesis, it will be possible to do writing assignments related to the comprehensive examinations. The student will first prepare the reading list for one of the comprehensive examinations, and then each week write a report on an article, a chapter of a book, or book from the reading list.

During each class, each assignment will be discussed in detail. In order to do this

each Tuesday, it is necessary for all assignments to be e-mailed to the teacher by

Saturday afternoon.

ASSIGNMENTS

Each week there will be a written assignment. The assignment is to be turned in by Saturday afternoon so that the teacher will have time to go over it before class on Tuesday.

ATTENDANCE

Class attendance is expected. If a student is not able to come to class, the instructor should be notified by e-mail before the class. Two unexcused absences will make it difficult for the student to pass this course.

GRADING

The final grade will be based on class participation (20%), written reports (50%), and

final papers (30%).
