Preface

The cross-curricular campaign “Promoting Positive Values and Attitudes through English Sayings of Wisdom (SOW)”

is organised by the English Language Education Section, Curriculum Development Institute, Education Bureau to provide opportunities for schools to connect English Language education with values education, enrich students’ English learning experiences and develop in them positive values and attitudes through appreciating the meaning and beauty of SOW.

As one of the signature events of the campaign, the SOW Picture Book Design Competition was organised in the 2020/21 school year to provide opportunities for students to enhance their multimodal literacy and develop their creativity through producing visual representations of SOW centering around a theme/themes which echo those of “My Pledge to Act (MPA) 2020/21” (i.e. Be Grateful and Treasure What We Have, Stay Positive and Optimistic). The Competition was divided into four divisions: Lower Primary Division (Primary 1–3), Upper Primary Division (Primary 4–6), Junior Secondary Division (Secondary 1–3) and Senior Secondary Division (Secondary 4–6).

In the entries submitted for the SOW Picture Book Design Competition, students shared the messages inspired by the SOW through the production of a picture book comprising hand-drawn or digital artwork of their choice of SOW. This flipbook is designed to display a collection of students’ works selected from the winning entries of the Competition to showcase 48 different SOW and the respective thought-provoking messages embedded with positive values and attitudes.
