Questions 46 through 48 refer to the following article.

Some people have difficulty beginning the words that they are trying to say. They may end up repeating the initial sound of a word again and again before finally getting beyond it to complete the whole word. This may happen time after time throughout their speech, but most noticeably at the beginning. Such a person is stuttering. It is often caused by tension of the muscles used in speech. The problem is often self-perpetuating as the speaker, aware of their problem, becomes more tense than previously when speaking, and as a result stumbles, or stutters, over even more words.

Stuttering is sometimes confused with tachyphemia, commonly called cluttering; however, there are many differences. Typically, whereas a stutterer will become more fluent towards the end of a sentence, a tachyphemia sufferer will often start lucidly but then lose their way, trail off into mumbling or even insert irrelevant words into their speech. Moreover, while a stutterer has clear thought proceses and knows what they want to say, a person with

tachyphemia cannot formulate a consistently clear thought: their thoughts may be said to be poorly organized.

Most significantly, a stutterer will be aware of their problem and their problem is a physical one. Tachyphemia, however, does not have a physical cause and its sufferers are often unaware of their problem. For these reasons, cluttering is much more difficult to treat than is stuttering.

46.Which of the following is an example of a stutterer’s speech?

(A) “I can too go, are you? (B) “I-It c-c-c-can’t be b-b-bec-cause of the w-w-weather, can it? (C) “Half of the games were too boring.” (D)“Between you and me,

I…what was that? I forget.”

47. What are the biggest problems for sufferers of tachyphemia?

(A) It has no physical cause and those suffering from it may not be aware they have a problem.

(7)

(B) It has no physical cause and those suffering from it may be acutely embarrassed.

(C) It has no physical cause and so it is expensive to treat (D) It has no physical cause and there are no symptoms.

48. What is a common cause of stuttering?

(A)Tachyphemia. (B) Stress or tension at work or in the home. (C) A lack of clarity in one’s thoughts (D) Overly tense muscles.
