EXTERNAL MERCHANDISE TRADE STATISTICS

AUGUST/2011 No. 8

The total merchandise export for August 2011 amounted to MOP546 million, down slightly by 0.2%

year-on-year, of which value of domestic exports (MOP202 million) increased by 3.2%, but that of re-exports (MOP344 million) decreased by 2.1%. Total merchandise import amounted to MOP5.72 billion, up notably by 51.5% year-on-year. Merchandise trade deficit amounted to MOP5.17 billion in August 2011.

From January to August 2011, total value of merchandise export decreased by 5.4% year-on-year to MOP4.53 billion, of which value of domestic exports and re-exports declined by 0.3% and 8.0% respectively.

Total value of merchandise import grew by 39.8% to MOP39.02 billion over the same period of 2010.

Merchandise trade deficit for the first eight months of 2011 widened by 49.2% year-on-year to MOP34.48 billion; the exports/imports ratio that reflects the situation of import and export balance stood at 11.6%, down by 5.6 percentage points year-on-year. From January to August 2011, total value of external merchandise trade amounted to MOP43.55 billion, up by 33.2% compared with MOP32.70 billion a year earlier.

In August 2011, exports of Textile & garment declined by 17.8% year-on-year, of which value of Knitted or crocheted garment and Textile fabrics decreased by 39.2% and 21.2% respectively. Exports of Non-textile grew by 5.8% year-on-year, of which value of Tobacco & wine rose by 77.8%.

In the first eight months of 2011, exports of Textile & garment fell by 13.8% to MOP956 million;

meanwhile, exports of Non-textile slid by 2.9% year-on-year to MOP3.57 billion, with that of Jewellery and Clocks & watches decreasing by 65.2% and 33.7% respectively, but exports of Tobacco & wine rising by 72.0%.

Analyzed by destination, merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP1.94 billion), Mainland China (MOP740 million), the USA (MOP393 million) and the EU (MOP273 million) in the first eight months of 2011 decreased by 6.4%, 2.4%, 30.3% and 1.1% respectively year-on-year.

In August 2011, total merchandise import amounted to MOP5.72 billion, up notably by 51.5% year-on- year, with that of Consumer goods rising by 57.6%.

In the first eight months of 2011, total value of merchandise import grew by 39.8% year-on-year to MOP39.02 billion, with that of Consumer goods (MOP23.50 billion) and Capital goods (MOP7.13 billion) rising by 42.1% and 71.5% respectively year-on-year.

Analyzed by imports of Consumer goods, in the first eight months of 2011, value of Food & beverages (MOP5.54 billion) expanded by 37.1% year-on-year; Other durable consumer goods (MOP7.85 billion) grew by 45.2%, with Gold jewellery (MOP3.73 billion) rising by 83.5%; Other semi-durable consumer goods (MOP5.15 billion) increased by 76.1%, with Handbags & wallets (MOP2.03 billion) surging by 119.3%.

In respect of Capital goods, imports of information technology products registered continuous increase. In the first eight months of 2011, imports of Mobile phones (MOP2.59 billion) and Portable computers (MOP758 million) soared by 83.5% and 265.4% respectively year-on-year.

In the first eight months of 2011, merchandise import from Mainland China (MOP11.99 billion), the EU (MOP9.73 billion) and Hong Kong (MOP4.43 billion) rose by 37.6%, 59.8% and 52.9% respectively year-on- year.
