There is a famous story about America’s first president, George Washington. When Washington was a young boy, he got an ax as a gift. To try the ax, he cut down his father’s cherry tree. When his father saw his tree cut down, he was angry and questioned his son. Young George was afraid, and thought about telling a lie, so he wouldn’t be punished. But at the last moment, he changed his mind and answered honestly.

Most people agree that this story is not a true one. It was invented later by people who wanted to make the president look like a good and honest man. True or not, it shows how difficult it is to admit mistakes we’ve made.

When we admit doing something wrong, we have to face whatever happens next. No one likes to be wrong, look foolish, or be embarrassed. If we confess, we might be punished. We might have to replace something we lost, took, or broke. We might even have to pay money to make up for what we’ve done.

Even when there’s a price to pay, the truth is always better than a lie. It takes real courage to confess doing something wrong, but honesty is always the best way to go.

42.( ) The cherry tree story showed that George Washington was a man of _______.

(A) generosity (B) honesty (C) forgiveness (D) privacy 43.( ) This story is usually believed _______.

(A) he didn’t like it (B) he was told to do it

(C) he wanted to try if the ax cut well (D) he needed to make a fire 45. ( ) In the third paragraph, make up for means “_______.”

(A) to become friendly with someone again (B) to end a fight

(C) to invent something to cheat somebody (D) to do something to show you’re sorry 46. ( ) Which is the best title for this passage?

(A) Honesty Is the Best Policy (B) Who Cut Down the Cherry Tree (C) The First US President (D) A Lesson in Forgiveness
